can you also take a note on the highlight?

tho i'd still argue that tapping/dragging your finger on the text is pretty unique UI for highlighting

I did like the kindle's screen better than the sony though.

Highlighting (underlining) on the Kindle is easy. Move the cursor to the place where you want the highlight to begin and click the cursor. Then move it to the place where you want the highlighting to end and click a second time.

And, yes, you can make a note on what you have just underlined. Simply go to the word at which you wish the note to appear and begin typing. The note window will appear. To save your note, click on "Save Note." To read or edit your note, move your cursor to the superscript number that has appeared at the end of the word at which you first made the note a click the cursor.

As far as my experiments, a note is attached to the page with highlight, not the highlight specifically but the highlight and the note will appear together in the "My Clippings.txt" file. That file can be printed out and/ or amended on your computer (notes are also available online and in the Kindle for PC app).

Also the clippings limit is higher than the Sony and can be circumvented to remove the limit. You also have the option of screen grabs of pages.

I'm not knocking the Sony, I just wanted to point out that it is not the only device with highlighting and note taking abilities. The iRed iLiad can do notes via stylus as well but I'm not sure about highlighting.

Edit: I see WT Sharpe gave you a more experienced answer on the note/highlight connection.

that would be one reason to go with the kindle if people want to be able to pull longer quotes directly out of the text. Tho I do wish it were touchscreen. The cursor wasnt bad but for me I'd get tired of pushing it up and down since I mark up the text very often. I could live with it though, and getting quotes out like that would indeed be very nice.

I just had this conversation with a sony support guy on live chat.

Quote:

Madison_> I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.

Madison_> I'll transfer the feedback to the concerned department.

jay> ok. so basically there's no immediate solution?

Madison_> Unfortunately, there are no resolution at this point of time.

jay> ok. can you make sure to raise these two issues to your superiors? One is that the 100 character limit on exporting highlighted text is far too low. Even the kindle does more than that.

jay> the second is that on library books (and on books purchased on sony's bookstore) the user cannot export his/her own notes.

jay> both are issues that have to do with exporting notes.

Madison_> Sure, Jay.

jay> these are both serious issues because notetaking is a major selling point of the prs-600

Madison_> feedback is crucial to us blah blah blah.
hopefully they will address both issues in a firmware update. I would definitely like to be able to copy quotes out of texts, at least paragraph-length quotes.

flyfree -- I tried this on an ebook that i borrowed from the new york public library. There is a way to get your notes, tho its not via the export function.

Basically, i saw the error message that you mention above. But if i sync the prs600 with the sony software, and then open up the ebook in the library folder, then I can copy each note individually.

(in the sony software, in the 'reader' folder, it wont even let me do that; but once i've synced it, i can do that much from within the 'library' folder).

It still wont let me use the export function tho, but at least you can pull the individual notes out via copy/paste of their text.

You know, come to think of it, the 100 character limit on exported highlights isnt totally fatal. Because you can always copy as much text as you want and paste it anywhere you want if you open any (non drm) document in the sony software.

Its only drm texts that they're not allowing *any* copying on. (For those, if you try to copy text even within the sony software, it wont let you). Hopefully they will relax that policy a bit for drm documents. But for non-drm documents (pdfs and epubs and etc) you can copy any long quote you want.

Many people, including me, want to be able to use an e-reader for more than “casual” or “leisure” reading. We want our e-reader to help us professionally and academically. We want to be able to highlight portions of a book and not have to retype what we have highlighted. The 100 character limit on Sony e-readers must be addressed.

And we want to be able to cite what we have highlighted and have a page number for our reference. Ebooks need to have corresponding page numbers to hard copies. Is that asking too much?

I am aware that publishers and authors are concerned about books being illegally copied and distributed. Surely somebody can come up with a solution and we can all be happy.

Glad to find this forum. I hope Sony addresses the problem. If not, I hope someone will provide a work around.
