Thanks Nevir. I can now see how Amazon is contributing to my confusion over device level vs. book level limitation.
The error message is clear in what it says about clearing the problem, but it focuses on registered devices without saying that the limitation is based on the number of downloads to unique devices and not the number of registered devices that could potentially accept a download. If you had a large number of devices registered, more than Daffy4U even, you would have to take care to deregister one of your devices that had previously received the book in order to download the book onto another of the registered devices. Deregistering just any old device will not do the trick. It has to be one of the devices that currently has the book on it. Hence, a book level limit hiding behind a device level facade. |

Forgive the off-topic, I wanted to post a brief review of information that I was useful or not useful; note that today is Nov 12 2009. 1) Get your iPhone or iTouch or iPod's UDID; how to do this via iTunes: http://www.tuaw.com/2008/08/08/iphon...-single-click/ 2) Get iPhone Backup Extractor from http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com/free-download/ (Win, Mac, Linux) 3) iTunes probably performed a backup of your iPhone/iTouch, which seems to be what #2 uses, so just start the Backup Extractor and get the PRC files in application/com.amazon.lassen/documents/ebooks 4) I had to use Igor's kindlepid.py version 0.2 from http://igorsk.blogspot.com/2007/12/m...on-kindle.html and input the UDID entirely in lowercase. The PID from the uppercase UDID didn't work. 5) Used mobidedrm0.5.py to decrypt the PRC file, e.g., from http://nyquil.org/archives/1128-Conv...-a-Kindle.html Now to buy Topaz books and return them in 7 days. They are so slow on the iPod Kindle app anyway. Last edited by kspace; 11-12-2009 at 09:05 AM. Reason: Incorrect use of plurals. |

kspace, don't be surprised if your post gets edited. We're not allowed to give such specific information on circumventing Amazon's DRM (legal hassles from Amazon). That's why you've had a hard time finding the info you needed.

I have just sent an email to Amazon that I attach below. All in all, I am pretty much disappointed with how crippled the software is. It is not yet ready for the public.
============ Dear Amazon, You have released a public beta of the Kindle for PC software, yet I have been unable to locate a place where the public can submit their suggestions and bug reports for this beta release. Please forward this email to the right people. First, the goal of the software Kindle should be to provide a true representation of how Kindle books look on the actual Kindle to the extent possible. It may provide additional functionality (copy/paste, editing, cataloging, etc.) or improvements (color, larger screen, etc.); however, it should not display the text differently or provide lesser functionality than that found on the Kindle 2 or DX. Specific suggestions/bugs: 1. I have noticed that K4PC does not support the font tag (specifically, its color attribute). 2. There is no search function. 3. There is no support for toc.ncx (separate table of contents that is displayed at the bottom of the screen on the Kindle) and the right-left joystick navigation. 4. There is no support for the mobi dictionaries (viewed as books or as default dictionaries). 5. It would be great to have optional Kindle 1, Kindle 2, Kindle DX modes where (i) the size of the screen mirrors the one available on each of the devices; (ii) the available characters reflect only those available on the actual Kindle (for example, no Chinese support, etc.); and (iii) there is only shades gray (no color). In addition, I know that the Kindle 1 has some limitations with the number of hyperlinks that it can support on the same paragraph/line of text. These testing modes would help with development of books for the devices. Best, |

And it is BETA -- that means it very likely has a few bugs and/or is not fully featured.
