As a Stephen King fan for at least two decades, I have chosen not to support this book. It was a book I had been looking forward to for almost a year, had today marked on my calendar and everything. Then yesterday I found out that the ebook is delayed until December 24th.

I ran by WalMart over lunch to see how hefty it is -- I've been so eager for the book I considered it until I picked it up. There is NO way I'm going to read something that heavy in bed. It's about the thickness of two encyclopedia volumes!

So, I'll read it eventually, but only when it becomes available at my library so I don't have to pay for it. Our library also does digital, so eventually I'll be able to check it out as well.

Stephen King's "wanting to help the independent bookseller" idea is complete and utter crap. If THAT was truly the case, then there wouldn't have been $9 preorders at Walmart, Amazon, and Target. If anything, he's done the independent bookseller an even worse disservice.

Way to go, King. I was hoping this would be as epic as The Stand, but I'll just wait it out. I'm not buying.

Stephen King has lost some steam with his last few books, not really that excited about his releases for the most part.

I'm a big King fan. My pre-order of the hard cover is on it's way. I also ordered the collectors edition and I'll get the audio version from Audible when my next subscription credits show up at the end of the month.

I think he'll learn a lesson from this delay and is unlikely to do it again. As popular as he is, he alone cannot stop progress and save the small booksellers. A new book model is developing and we all have to adapt.

But of course! I've also pre-ordered the botched mini-series that will be made in about 5 years.

How is $18 unreasonable for a large hardback?

I think this was a big mistake on both parts. I'm a fan of SK. I'm not a rabid fan, but I really like his work, especially 'On Writing' and 'The Stand' and would like to support the man.

I won't read a hardback at 1000+ pages since I'm so used to my readers. I've pre-ordered the Kindle edition at $9.00. If the Amazon reviews come in at close to 3 stars, I'll cancel my order - there are so many other books to read. Had they had the Kindle eBook at the same time and price as the hardcover, I'd have pre-ordered without the reviews and started reading as soon as it hit my device. Now I have options and can back out.

Also, I think hardback and paperbacks today are complete and utter crap. I'm careful with my books but many of today's books fall apart rather easily. I wish publishers would come out with hardbacks bound like the Everyman's Library series of books - cloth covers and smyth sewn bindings with archival paper. Also, the compact size of the EL books are easy to hold while reading. I prefer digital copies on my reader to the sub-standard quality bindings of todays books.

This is why I will never purchase a Stephen King book. This is from an address to high school students.

"I don't want to sound like an ad, a public service ad on TV, but the fact is if you can read, you can walk into a job later on. If you don't, then you've got the Army, Iraq, I don't know, something like that. It's not as bright,"

I think $9 was the online price, not the store price.

I am really disappointed in the delay of UTD. I'm going to see him in Sarasota next Monday where I'll be buying a signed hard back copy, but I'm not going to read that. I'm very confused why he ok'ed this...

Sounds to me like he was just saying that's just about your only option, not calling military people stupid. I would guess, given that comment, he probably doesn't have a high regard for that career path but I don't think he is calling them stupid. He could just as easily have said "back hoe operator" but the military is a bit more topical.

For people who can't read you do have seriously depleted options, obviously, and many of them do end up in the military because it's just about the best option for someone who can't. That being said.. I'm pretty sure the army requires literacy, though given the vets I work with that can't... it doesn't seem to enforce it that hard.

It also seems like a pretty off the cuff remark. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to be judged entirely on some random remark I make. I sound like a jerk all the time without really meaning it because of some badly phrased comment or another.

Really? Didn't they dumb down the entrance exam a few years ago since they are desperate for people?

I also don't disagree with Stephen King's comments. I have had way too many friends join the service because they thought that was their only option. One of my best friends almost made a horrible decision after his dad passed away. He felt like he had to do something with his life and almost signed with the Army since he thought it was the only way to get training. Thankfully (for his wife and children) I talked him out of it. He has to fight a little harder to make his dreams come true (working as a prison guard and going to school to be a firefighter on the side) but at least there is no chance of his children growing up without a father.

This has to be the most idiotic post I have read on this site. Do you really believe that no prison guards or firefighters have lost their lives in the line of duty?
