For me it's the other way around with this one. While the original book is all about what soldiers fighting for survival of the species think, say and feel, the movie was just lots of running and shouting. I read the book many times already, won't look at the movie again.

As for other films that are better than the books, I'd say: 1) "The Shining" by Stanley Kubrick with Jack Nicholson was much better than Stephen King's original book. I'm comparing them as horrors perhaps if I was concentrating on the whinings of an alcoholic writer, I'd prefer the book.2) "Blade Runner" by Ridley Scott with Harrison Ford was much better film than Philip K Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" a book. If Dick had some profound idea at the roots of his book, he missed me completely when explaining it. |

The Odessa File by Frederick Forsyth - mainly because it handles Tauber's diary better. For me, at least, that came over as a long, killer chunk of unrelated side plot (until I'd finished the book, of course . . .)

I totally agree about screenplays sucking when subsequently made into novels. I will never forget how bad the book version of Fatal Attraction was. |

The Constant Gardiner by John Le Carre - it's a good film, but film cannot cover the depths of emotion the protagonist goes through as he discovers what his wife had been investigating....

I really didn't have the surfing elves in mind when I made my comment (and had forgot about that part until you mentioned it), rather the pacing of the movie in general, which I thought was excellent.

Brian De Palma's Carrie was better than King's novel. Slumdog Millionaire was better than Q&A.

As good as the novel was the film version of Silence of the Lambs was better. Oh, and the Wizard of Oz. |

For me the movie 'The Boat" had more impact than the book. Sure, lots of detail was left out but that's ok.

I just had problems envisioning the enclosed tight spaces and the anxiety felt by those on board. I thought the movie brought that across real well. |
