BTW, we later discovered from folks who worked at the Feed & Seed store where we bought the rat that it had formerly been some little girl's pet, which accounted pretty well for its outgoing personality.

that's horrid! I'm not incredibly keen on rats, but to turn a totally domesticated one into a python meal is just awful of those people!

I didn't make the rules. Blame nature, God, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster for making certain species carnivores, but don't blame me. I would have loved to have set out a bowl of cheerios for its nourishment each morning, but the end result would have been a dead python.

The animals killed by pythons die quickly, usually within 30 seconds. Have you ever seen how animals die in some of the factory farming operations?
