Frozen peas here are available in the frozen foods section in any supermarket. Packaging varies - it can be plastic bags or paper boxes - but the boxed variety can always be transferred to a zip lock bag. We get peas fresh at the local greenmarket in season, and frozen other times. Canned peas would be considered an emergency measure.

well, canned peas are not too bad, and they have the advantage of not taking up valuable freezer space (shelf space is *slightly* more available). although to be honest i don't get them too often. i will take a look for frozen ones, though, and compare. if they are better, i will eat those ones, and freeze some canned ones for future emergencies.

Well, "not too bad" is probably an apt description. Fresh is best, frozen is second best, canned is if neither fresh nor frozen are available.

Freezer space is at a premium here, too, but it tends not to be an issue because frozen stuff tends to be consumed almost immediately. (Vegetables, at least. Meat may stay in longer.)

I'm just curious about Parisian food shopping. Frozen foods are handled by separate shops devoted to them, and are not sold in regular food markets?

Actually no, I should be so fortunate as to have an nVidia chipset. Been a fan of nVidia since the Windows days; they just have better support, despite minimal performance differences between tham and ATI. No, this is Intel GMA500 (the rightfully-maligned Poulsbo). The Aspire One AO751 is a study in contradictions: 2GB RAM (instad of 512MB) but only a 1.33 GHz processor, 250 GB hard drive (instead of 160 or, even worse, the 16GB SSD) but it's not SATA.

There appears to be workarounds for both the VGA and chipset drivers for Ubuntu 9.04, but Ubuntu frankly bores me. I got a PCLinuxOS spin called ZenMini; it's like PCLOS' MiniMe except with GNOME instead of KDE, and it's sharp. Would actually make a great desktop spin IMO. I'll probably review it for my site. Ironically, in their quest to not be Windows, Ubuntu has become huge enough that all the support is for them. Fortunately I can tweak the hell out of it so it doesn't look like I just put the liveCD in 10 minutes prior...

Oh, and FWIW the Ubuntu Netbook Remix is crap; the regular desktop edition actually works better if you can believe that.

Fresh peas! When I was young, we lived in the country and our garden bordered on a pea field. After harvesting, there was always a thin border of unharvested peas for us to pick.

I remember picking them and then spending hours sat in the sun in our garden (because it was always sunny when I was younger) with my Mum and sister podding them.

another solution, it's cold enough here already .... put foot in bath of cold water - then poke it out of a nearby window and let the wind cool it rapidly .,...,,,.....,,...,.,,...,,..

i say that because i like peas, but they're not my favourite vegetable, so i don't eat them too often to begin with. usually i have a small can or two of them on hand as "emergency rations" if i don't manage to go to the shop. i buy most of my vegetables fresh, although since i got a refrigerator with a freezer i've been keeping things like frozen spinach and cauliflower always in there. also, my new favourite thing in the world is pre-chopped frozen onions. i hate chopping onions because they make me cry so much, but i just can't cook without them !

no, we have frozen foods in regular grocery markets too, however there is also a chain called Picard (it turns out they have a site : http://www.picard.fr/) which is shops which sell *only* frozen food, of all sorts : individual raw ingredients (chopped onions, cauliflower, raspberries... also fish and meat, of course), mixes you just have to cook (or unfreeze, like for mixed fruit salad), portionable purées and soupes, prepared meals you just have to heat, desserts, ice cream... pretty much anything, really. but only frozen stuff. i shop there very occasionally, partly because i never got in the habit really since i didn't have a freezer before, partly because my freezer is too tiny for me to buy much frozen food so mostly i buy a few standard ingredients and the rest fresh. i wouldn't go at all, but there is one literally right next to my house. but they have a much wider selection that a standard grocery store, for obvious reasons.

My SO, for example, knits and crochets, and is usually found in a knitting circle when we are with groups of like minded people. Those circles are generally female, too.

As long as everybody involved likes doing it, all is well.

when I had teenagers all over the place I was constantly using ice for a variety of injuries. a quick way to get a ice pack (without using the vodka) is to just add rubbing alcohol to a bag of water. freezes quickly and you can do a few and rotate them. also think about taking a few wash rags wetting them and freezing them. I actually have a whole stack of gel packs that can be re-used but stored outside of the freezer.

thanks, i'll look into the neoprene thingy. currently i've got my ankle things on it and they certainly feel like they're compressing it. it's not actually my ankle which is hurt, it's the side / top of my foot, a bit further down than the ankle. the part called the "neck of the foot" (cou-du-pied) in french. more or less where the arrow is pointing, but slightly towards the outside :

anything in plastic will be just fine, and totally hygenic.

even a pair of tights with a sock over them would work! to start the compression bit

if nothing else, this incident has shown me that i am somewhat unprepared for emergencies. no bandages, no ice-packs... sheesh. the alcohol tip is another good one, i don't think i have any of that on hand either (naturally) but i'll add it to my list.

okay, okay, i'll stop buying canned peas ! (in my defense, i've never bought canned asparagus. ever. and other than peas the only cans i buy regularly are of beans, or crushed tomatoes, which are also "emergency rations"). it turns out picard not only has frozen peas, they in fact have FIVE KINDS of frozen peas (seriously). so i'll try some of them, and if they aren't tasty i'll save them for future injuries. actually i have to say that stumbling on the picard site has really raised them in my esteem, because they actually have a checkbox to display *only* products suitable for vegetarians ! (also one to disply only organic products.) i have NEVER seen that before. i am quite impressed.
