Last word on my computer travails. Spotted a GNU License ding-joint (pay if you like it) piece of software called Clonezilla. Does the same as Norton Ghost but Much less fussy. Built a boot pen drive with it and cloned my hard drives and, voila, the new ones worked. I'm typing on one of them right now. Bumped the RAM to 2 Gig, too, and the new 2.5 is 7200 RPM. Whoohse....

(As Tacticus said of the Roman war machine - "They scorch the earth and call it victory." I have recoverable machines now. Call it victory....)

Glad to hear that

Zelda - if you can get one, try a neoprene support bandage. They work marvels when I mess my ankle up. And I've got a couple of gel packs that can be strapped to it with plastic braces when I do it really badly, but they do rule out wearing things like trousers or boots.

Top tip - on my first aid course we were told that, if you don't have ice to hand, a bag of frozen pee is a good alternative. So, now I always keep one in the freezer just in case.

that just seems unhygienic to me.

(on a side note, good god, it's astounding how long it takes cold water to freeze ! that bad has been in there for hours but the last time i checked it (not long ago) it was still visibly liquid, at least on top.)

thanks, i'll look into the neoprene thingy. currently i've got my ankle things on it and they certainly feel like they're compressing it. it's not actually my ankle which is hurt, it's the side / top of my foot, a bit further down than the ankle. the part called the "neck of the foot" (cou-du-pied) in french. more or less where the arrow is pointing, but slightly towards the outside :

Fixed that for you This is the alternative we have always used also. It's cold and it conforms to any shape.

(now i can't help wondering if he did that on purpose. )

peas here come in a can. not nearly as practical for conforming to any shape. they might be available frozen as well, to be honest i've not noticed (i haven't had a freezer for very long), in any case i'm almost sure i could find them in the frozen foods shop, but i wouldn't want to have to keep some around just for emergencies, my freezer is tiny and i like to keep it full of FOOD ! (edit : i mean food to eat, not food to wear !)

Get some vodka (the cheap stuff so you won't be missing anything) and pour some in an airtight freezer bag along with some water (about half and half). Turns into slush; works great, no food goes bad, and if the bag is good it's reusable.

*Right now*, I'm looking for Linux drivers for my new Acer Aspire, which for the moment appear to not exist despite the fact that, when first released, the blasted things ran Linux.

!@#$%&*! corporations.

This will also be my primary e-reading device, but everything I read (being all technical 'n' stuff) is either in .chm or .pdf, so I don't need 85 e-reading and/or converting apps, fortunately.

May have to bite the bullet on this one...

That wouldn't be the nvidia graphics drivers that have not yet been released for the newest kernel? Yup -- auto-upgraded mine to 2.6.30, and not graphics support.

Manually booting into the old kernel for the moment whilst I await the new drivers (yes, I know there are workarounds...).

hm, interesting suggestion ! i would never have thought of that. i will add "cheap vodka" to my list of things to buy tomorrow. and i'll just go check on the ice, now ; maybe it actually *is* ice, finally.

(to add insult to injury, i now have a cramp in my calf because of the odd way i've been walking around the house, when i absolutely have to walk ).

In the meantime, how are those drowning baptists doing? some of us are in suspense, you know.
