Harry Flashman, from George MacDonald Fraser's extensive series set in Victorian times. As well as the intriguing character the books contain very well researched historical accounts of the period.

Grant Naylor's two Red Dwarf books: Neither of the two main characters, Lister and Rimmer, could be called a hero.

The first time you come across Lister, he is driving a stolen taxi on the moon Mimas. He found himself on Mimas after a very drunken night in Liverpool, Earth. Now he's trying to scam enough money to get home. His passenger is Rimmer, on his way to visit an android brothel (mix and match your own). Their behaviour goes downhill from there.

"Slippery" James Bolivar diGriz, aka the Stainless Steel Rat, from the series by Harry Harrison. I've always found him to be a fun character and a complete scoundrel.

The best that come to mind are:

Kane from Karl Edward Wagner's fantasy cycle.

Corwin of Amber, with whose eyes we look at first five volumes of The Chronicles of Amber.
Actually, the entire family of Corwin are anti-heroes.

Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser from Fritz Leiber's sword and sorcery tales.

OK, I'm sold. I've added the Takeshi Kovacs books to my fictionwise wishlist. Once I finish the Felix Castor series I'll pick them up.

That does look interesting. I don't suppose it's available as an E-book anywhere?

And one could argue that the ultimate anti-hero is Satan in Milton's Paradise Lost. He definitely gets the best lines and has a more consistent motivation.
