BOb, I wanted to upgrade the hardware only, not the software.

Why upgrade the hardware?

1. My current hardware burns several hundred watts an hour, and the new hardware burns 40-45 watts, max. With my usage pattern, the new hardware will pay for itself in less than 5 years, just from the electricity savings.

2. My current hardware uses IDE hard drives, which are basically disappearing from the marketplace. Hard drive will eventually fail, that's part of computing. I want to have a computer with which I can repair wear items.

3. With all the electricity usage on my old machine, I put in lots of fans. (All my packs are cartridge replaceable, each cart has a fan in it, as well as two system fans.) I wanted a low power machine so the fan(s) would be less noisy. As I am not a power user, I am willing to accept a slower machine for quiet.

None of these reasons are software. I'm happy with the software. All I want to do is run the software I already have. Is this too much to ask?

Re: Linux. I don't want to tweak the system endlessly, built GUI package for software that doesn't have them, and so forth. I just want to use the tool. Actually I plan to run a dual system, one box Windows and one box Linux, with a KVM switcher, similar to what I run today, (although today I run a windows internet machine. I've played with Linux Mint, which will do for an internet machine, once I get e-mail set up on it.)

i've never tried linux but i'm frequently tempted to. the thing that is stopping me so far is that i would need a dual-boot system, and still keep windows, because for 90% of the work i do is using Illustrator and Photoshop, with Illustrator being far far more important. it's a complex and very powerful app and i'm pretty sure there is not a linux equivalent that can equal it for my use. i can't decide whether it's really worth it to me to shut everything down when i finish working to switch over to linux for a few hours, particularly since often i continue to work in the evening, especially if i'm working on something for myself.

I'm actually trying to sort out the stacks of unread paperbacks invading my room. Managed to track down another bookcase to add to the apartment and now I'm in the futile struggle to prioritize the books I want to read. The most important ones get to stay in my room, the others will be moved to the lounge which are quickly becoming a library...

I never would disparage someone for something as esoteric as the OS that they run. For example, I have been working on learning Ruby on Rails, a programming language and framework for making web pages. I have had a few problems with it on my Windows machine (yes we are a .Net shop at work and I run Windows 7).

Rather than get help I get a lot of Windows sucks and Mac/Linux snobbery. Answers like if you have to use Windows run a Linux VM.. blah blah... yea, thanks that doesn't help me.

Ah... that makes perfect sense. But, I've got to say... as marking speak as it sounds, Windows 7 is fast, stable and secure (enough). I run it on a new machine I built at the office and I've had no problems with it. Granted it don't need to support any old hardware and such.

Anyone buying a new machine today that wants Windows and thinks they should get Windows XP, in my opinion is making a mistake. As you have found windows XP and @ 2002 software doesn't support or work will with a lot of new hardware these days.

I agree... you would be much better served by a Mac. My understanding is that is "the" platform for designers. That said, I am not that and can't compare and contrast the software.

Sometimes the software you want/need to run actually defines the OS you will use. For you that sounds the case... although there are Photoshop versions for the Mac I think. Although I have found that Adobe doesn't have favorable cross-grade prices... if I recall correctly there was no discount for my son when he went to Mac from PC and wanted to keep using Adobe Elements (photo catalog software I think that was the name) so it was either buy it again for Mac... or not. He decided to switch to iPhoto and I got him the 2009 upgrade to iLife... he is pretty happy with it.

As far as what I talk about at parties... what parties? I am too busy coding for fun.

oh, no worries, all adobe's products are available for mac. but... you have to drop a LOT of dosh on them, after already shelling out for very pricey hardware.

i would be very happy to have a mac, but they're far too expensive for me, especially since i would also have to buy the adobe suite for mac, and that costs a FORTUNE. plus it's possible (although i haven't checked) that there is some software i use which doesn't have a mac equivalent, although now i imagine that's much less likely. i always have custom-built pcs, and i can switch out single components as necessary so i almost never buy a whole new machine at once. i did last year and it cost me about 600€, for a really good machine, fast proc, lots of ram, huge hd... for an equivalent from mac i would have had to spend at least twice that, or more.

macs are fairly standard for designers, but i'm a webdesigner, so i write code as well. in webdesign i'd say it's a more even split, there are lots of webdesigners who work on pcs, if only for easier compability with their developpers, who are almost all on pcs.

(i do go to parties, but i've been known to talk about code etc. at them. and recently i've been known to talk about ebooks at them. )
