Woohoo! Is way cool to see you starting to get the rep. of THE author to turn to about things e-bookish!

Way to go Steve!

Actually, I don't mind a bit. And if it helps to push e-books "over the edge" into Real, Healthy Industry territory, I'm willing to take the front lines.

(Besides, I'm such a media whore!)

Steve,
Congrats on appearing in the Times. How did the story come about? I mean, how did Peter Wayner find you, and why did he decide to base his story on you, to begin with? Was he a friend or he found you via contacts there at Mobile, or just plain luck? As a former newswoman in Miami, I am always interested in how stories get generated, esp in a big paper like the Times. Dish. My guess is he found you by googling the topic and your blog came up? Right. Often things happen that way. AND after the 15 minutes of fame, although to appear in the Old York Times is really like 15 days of fame !!! -- did you notice any increase in traffic or book orders or sales? It would be interesting to hear the fallout from the Times piece.

Peter told me that, in doing research for the article on e-book formats, he came across my opinions in MR and in TeleRead. He further checked out my website. He didn't know me, but he was familiar with the e-book subject (he's previously corresponded with David Rothman of TeleRead), and based on what he saw he decided I would be a good source for the author's POV of general technical knowledge of the format situation, and its impact on the industry. (You'll notice in the article that he did cover the POV of e-book aggregators and software makers as well.)

As far as results, I've seen an untick in website traffic and sales, but it's been modest... roughly a sale a day for the past month, which is more than I usually see after an initial release of an e-book (Verdant Skies had gone live just a few weeks before, and most of the sales for that happened in the first week). Most significant is the fact that those recent sales have mostly been from new customers who discovered me through the article, which means I'll hopefully see return sales of my other books from some of them.

I've also been advised by more than one party to work on a non-fiction reference book on the e-book phenomenon, to take advantage of my (at least temporary) status as an "authority" on the subject. I'm about halfway through the draft now, and probably I'll have it done by January, if not sooner (no promises... wifey wants a vacation!). After that, back to fiction (most likely Kestral 3).

Congratulations all the way from down here. Never seen a New York Times but it sounds serious.

One of the first e books I purchased was from Steve and I still have it and can still read it no trouble even though I am on my 3rd reader. I have never given it away or set it up for free downloading on a web site. We are capable of self managing digital rights despite what so many publishers think.

Thank you Steve

Thanks, Steve, for the update on how that Times story came to be. Luck o' the Irish, as me dad used to say. As for the nonfiction ref book idea, YES, do it sir. Great idea and use your Times connection to get the word out. Very good. It wasn't really a 15 minutes of fame thing, i hate that tired idom anyways, it was your time, sir, your time has arrived, and you deserve. Can't wait to see the ref book when out. will it come in print and ebook both? or just ebook? do it, sir!

I'm planning on just e-book, since Big Pub still wants nothing to do with me...

Good! Don't need Big Pub. Ebook will do just fine, and it will find the audience it deserves this way. Go, sir!
