Generally a google search of authorname, ebook will get you enough hits to find it IF it's available.

For waterstones you definetly need to specify the Ebook term!

I'm mostly ended up at BookonBoard and or Waterstones - but there are a few others that are useful.

You can go to search.overdrive.com and click on your country to see what libraries use it's services for downloadable books. Some libraries that show up do only offer audiobooks though.

All of those sources confirm what was stated earlier.. that there are only 2 (maybe 3) libraries that have them, and none of them are anywhere near me. I don't think the library route is worth persuing at the moment.

There are other options available. If you sign up to a virtual VISA card and set your card 'currency' to USD then you can continue to use sites like this in the USA from the UK.

Here - Sony's "Where to get free eBooks" page has a list, although at the moment it's only Essex, Luton & two in Dublin. (It's a Flash box, so can't copy & paste)

I was able to register for an account with Essex libraries, although I live in Suffolk - I think I got the link from this site:

All you need to do is go to http://www.essexcc.gov.uk/libraries. In the list of online services find

Join the library - Online application Not a library member yet? Sign up online now and click the link to join online.

They say:

•Sign up online - anyone with a valid e.mail address can sign up online - you'll be able to start using some services straight away

I have borrowed several ebooks, although the range is limited. There are more audiobooks available.

I have continued to use Fictionwise, and in fact decided to extend my membership. I have thought recently (past 3/4 weeks) that there have been more books which are not geographically restricted - certainly among the romance new releases.

I'd forgotten about that trick... it's a while since I've done it but I presume it still works.

If anyone HAS tried that virtual card trick - can someone recommend a virtual VISA card to me? I can see there are plenty around the place, want want a reliable one I'll then go and give it a go.

First one I tried - entropay.com - seems to be working OK with the Sony Store.

5% fee to load the card up with money.. but given that I'm saving about 60% of the cost of some books I can live with that.

That's odd.. just posted a site and it got moderated.. OK without mentioning any sites I just signed up for the first one I found on google. Works fine with the Sony store. I load it up in dollars and they charge me pounds, plus a 5% fee for their trouble (which given the price difference between ebooks in the US and UK is more than reasonable).

I used the address of the US branch of our company as my address, so I'm not telling any porkies (they can even phone me there and get through to me, eventually).

It was moderated because of the link that you included. All clear now!

Ah - so you still need a US address - I shall have to call my friend who moved over there and see if he can apply for one for me.

Much appreciated - I'll look into it! Again, Fictionwise's range is fine, and I'd been using 'em for two years previously - it's just the UK distributors of books are so very, very greedy. For example, a US book that is $9.99 suddenly becomes £9.99 in the UK - yet the price should really be about £6-£7. This isn't actually down to places like fictionwise or retailers being evil, it's down to the UK Distrubutotion business; people who buy in bulk and sell on, who fix prices. Awful afairs, but what do you expect in a country that is just a nation of shopkeepers now

You can sign up for the virtual visa in US dollars using your UK address with no problem.

The Sony store requires a US address. In *theory* you could put anything. Put Beverly Hills 90210 or something.. but to be strictly legal you need an address where you exist, at least virtually.

You could put your friend's address as long as they don't mind - it's 99.9% certain that they won't send you any mail anyway, but just in case they do having someone at the other end who knows you and can open it/forward it/whatever is worth the effort.

Hmm - I think fictionwise's store looks for the payment method coming from the US, so the card may work - we shall see, but I will check with friend to see if he minds using address!
