So what is the best thing to do here - just invent an obscure ID? Does it let me configure an email address later that I can use in case I lose my password or they need to contact me (and can I change that address when I change ISP)?
cos(sqrt of 42)^3 seems like it should work? No? Yes? Don't forget that 42 is the ultimate answer to the life, universe and everything. So any variation of it is the answer you likely are seeking.

It is like changing your cell phone number. Your phone still works because it still has the same electronic serial number. The just associate your new phone number with the same ESN and everything still works.

This is correct. You can update you email address and it becomes your new login. Your books bought with old login will still be readable on devices activated with new login (as long as publisher did not lock the book to a single device).

I have wondered about this... If it is locked to one device (and the PC is considered ONE device) and I have to use ADE to download to my PC, then the PC is my ONE device and I can't transfer to my SECOND registered device (the Sony)?

It really depends on the publisher/distributor. Most don't lock it to a device, only to a user. Some lock it to a single device (and no transfer to handhelds at all) and some lock it to a single PC and any number of handhelds (up to a usual limit on the number of activations). ADE Item Info dialog will tell what it is.

We'll see which way it evolves. Some distributors want to be able to lock it to a single handheld (and no PC) and we may implement it at some point. But maybe everyone will just complain about this whole device locking thing and they decide to drop it and I can work on nicer text layout instead of this DRM stuff - who knows?

Don't get me wrong. I do enjoy working on layout more and I wish I had more time to spend on it. But if DRM work is what it takes to make publishers happy and get them to do ebooks - I'll do DRM. Getting all content available in electronic form is the most important thing at this point and we need to have publishers on board even if it means tightening the DRM. How strict the DRM should be (and if it should be used at all) will be sorted out next - and the end result may very well be different for different types of content (just like we see it for the software).
