There's no full price version of Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). There are just two differently priced upgrade versions, one an upgrade from Leopard (10.5), and one an upgrade from previous versions.

I've spent 8 hours trying to install either Windows 2000 or XP PRO on the new Acer Aspire Revo. Turns out the new hardware doesn't use standard hard drive drivers. ARRGHHH. Now I'll have to burn a slipstream version of the install CD with the drivers installed because there is no floppy. Have to check both Acer and Toshiba for drivers...

(Need to put on something soft and soothing on the music box. Like AC/DC's If You Want Blood....)

I went to update my Ubuntu lappy to Kinky Koala this morning (oh, okay, it's called "Karmic Koala"), but it wanted to download over a gig of data, and that's not good for peak time on our peak/off-peak capped plan (unfortunately, unlike Apple and Microsoft, my Ubuntu updates aren't in my ISP's "freezone"). I guess I'll set it off tomorrow morning if I remember. If everything goes to hell (though it shouldn't) I might try hackintoshing the thing.

(Note, there's no real data I care about on my lappy - it's really being used like a "netbook". That is, web-browser only)

Cheers,
Marc

Does it really matter what version of Ubuntu/Linx that you run then? Isn't browser version more important? You upgrading just to upgrade?

Ubuntu by default will inform you when new versions are available and automatically upgrade you. That can be convenient -- I installed Ubuntu 8.10 from CD on my desktop to triple boot with Win2K Pro and Win XP Pro, and 9 had just come out. I let it upgrade me to the new release, which saved downloading an ISO image and burning a CD.

I have a fast (10mbps) cable modem connection with no bandwidth caps, so it was convenient to do it that way.

The Ubuntu upgrades are a bit like Windows critical patches, though you are assuming less risk if you don't upgrade...

Waterstone's UK customer service is really annoying me. The staff seem to have trouble both in recognising a customer and in understanding the notion of service.

I've been without one of my readers for two whole months because of their ineptness. The full saga is here:

Waterstones have no idea what constitutes "Customer Service ". Having spoken with their "Customer Service team representatives" on a number of occasions one of them let slip in frustration that they are a " Contracted out service" and have no authority to make any decisions or concessions. WTF!! as far as I can see there is no point in having anything to do with Waterstones!!

Spend your money elsewhere!

I expect that pshrynk will add some chlorpromazine to Adrian's zany carters. It should be ok, but let's keep our fingers crossed for the local population.
