Eowyn is right there. Blame Amazon if you want to blame somebody.

What I'm wondering.....If you reflash from mobi to ePub and vice versa, will your books stay on your reader? Or do you have to rebuild your library all over again?

Reflashing has no effect on loaded content; on the Opus, for example, you have a "Digital Editions" folder for ePub books, and an "eBooks" folder for Mobi books. The ADE firmware only looks at the "Digital Editions" folder; the Mobi firmware only looks at the "eBooks" folder.

Then why is it that devices such as the Pocketbook support both ePUB and Mobi? The Cool-er supports Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) with both ePUB and PDF with or without DRM, as well as PRC (without DRM).

If we're going to get two firmware versions (in the first quarter of 2009, so says the prophecy ), why can't we have a firmware which supports both ePUB with DRM and Mobi without DRM and another with DRMed Mobi and DRM-free ePUB?

The most important reason is probably a lack of resources to implement this. There might also be business considerations that it is not accepteble to have a non DRM MobiPocket reader that is not as good as the DRM version.

The devices which support ADE and DRM-free Mobi are not doing so using the official Mobi reader, which Bookeen use, but some third-party Mobi-reading software such as FBReader, which is not nearly as good as the "real" Mobi software. Yes, Bookeen could go down such a route, but at the expense of a major degradation in the quality of the Mobi support.

Then it would be Bookeen's fault, actually. They've been working on adding folders for a year (I expect the folder icons to be awesome after so much hard work), so lack of resources does sound like the most probable reason for this botched job.

I'm hoping that the real delay was trying to figure out how to slim it down for the limited memory in the original Gen3. It would be a real downer if after all this waiting I can't use this release.

I suspect it's more that extra features have been added, which cause more bugs that need to be fixed. I still hope for a firmware upgrade. I just fear it will be a bit of an anti-climax when it does arrive.

I don't want much from a firmware update. The main two things I want are

(1.) Much quicker start-up times when large numbers of books installed. The 'instant on' of the Kindle and the Sony put the CyBook Gen 3 to shame.

(2.) Much quicker navigation around the library.

In short, I want the new firmware to make it practical to keep my entire library ( circa 2000 ebooks) on the Cybook.

I fear that we won't get (1.)

If you put all the books in a sub director the boot time will not depend on the number of books.

I haven't found this to be true. Hmm.. well, actually I had all my books in lots of subdirectories (author name). I'll do some tests.

Test 1: 387 books in lots of author folders
Time from disconnecting USB to library screen: 40 seconds

Test 2: 387 books in lots of author folders, inside another folder
Time from disconnecting USB to library screen: 40 seconds

Test 3: 45 books in lots of author folders
Time from disconnecting USB to library screen: 14 seconds

Nope. It's number of books, not whether they're inside one subfolder or lots.

Where that does make a difference is in dictionary look-up. Dictionaries should be 'loose' in the ebooks folder, and all other books should be in sub-folders. This cuts down the time for a dictionary look-up enormously, as, incredibly, it searches the top level folder for dictionaries on every look-up.

Nope. It's number of books, not whether they're inside one subfolder or lots.
But try putting all your books in the root - I think you'll find that will make a difference.

Are you sure that disconnecting USB is the same as turning the power on? My observations was the time from turning the power on. (Or I misremember...).

I think you three are right

Moving the books into subdirectories make startup (and back from USB-connect) times shorter, but it still takes longer the more books you have. At least that was my experience.

Ah, that makes sense.

And yes - disconnecting from USb is almost identical to switch-on.

40 seconds for 387 books is still too long.

ADE uses the eBooks folder just fine. It's where I have all my books on the Opus.
