You need to have a valid address in the US, which I have. For instance I could not change my location to the UK as I don't have a valid UK address.

The international Kindle is set up to allow books to be purchased when away from the base location and this is very clear in the documentation for the international kindle. I am sure that the rights holders are very aware of this functionality.

In reading this thread, you seem to have a distinct grudge against this company for some reason.

They've very clearly stated it works one way, and it works in another one. In this case, it sounds like they're giving the rights owners the finger.

And yes, I dislike lying control-freak companies. So sorry. (I don't like Apple either...). I also have a major grudge, working in a creative industry, against DRM - it's turning legitimate customers against us, even when other forms of media, let alone other companies in the same sector use it!

The money to be made is staggering. No company would 'refuse' sales like that.
Yet somehow little old Sony with its limited library of ebooks can manage to sell books in Canada along with hardware, and so can MobiPocket and a few other electronic book retailers. And yet Amazon, with its clout and the fact it's selling Kindles WITHOUT WIRELESS ACCESS in the fucking CONGO can't somehow make Canadian publishers play ball, and somehow can't sell the Kindle without wireless access in Canada when they can do so in SRI-bloody-LANKA. So they can sell the Kindle hardware in those countries, without the all-important wireless connection, but can't even sell the hardware in Canada. Yes, I understand they want to tie everyone to the Kindle/Amazon store for buying... but they're selling it without wireless in several parts of the world, and have negotiated deals with the British publishers whose secondary arms are usually also in Canada. One of the world's biggest seller of books can't somehow bring any leverage in?

I call bullshit on that excuse. They just don't WANT to.

This is the place for everyone to express their opinion but it is not the place to blow off steam with off color comments. Please keep the tone of your posts civil and cut out the curse words. Otherwise you will be asked to leave.

Calm down, there is no one here that caused the problem you seem to have. Don't try and take it out on this forum.

Amazon as a company can be called many things, but stupid isn't generally one that comes to mind and to not sell in Canada simply because they don't want to would be stupid. There has to be a reason or reasons for it.

People's attitudes amaze me.. I really do not understand the thinking behind "if a book is not available for me, i will lie and then it is or I will simply get it for free from the darknet"... the sense of entitlement is scary.

Why? It's entirely predictable, rather, if you take a look at social trends.

Honestly, my attitude ("buy the book second hand") is no better for the author.

Copyright is granted to ensure that books are available. So if the system does not work then you have to get the book in another way. The entitlement problem is with the persons or enitites that are restricting access to book. Why do they think they are entitled to do that?

Because they have been granted that right by the creator of the work and the law.

Well, laws does not imply entitlement in the moral sense.

So, as far as Canadians should be concerned, the real villains are the authors?
...

I think you're depicting a rather simplistic version of the publishing industry.

What? I think you are deliberately misinterpreting what I said. I said granted by the creator of the work AND the law.

That's what publishing is based on, it really IS that simple.

and nowhere did I say anything about Canadians .... but if you want me to....
