I'm pretty sure you get first dibs on Dorothy (which makes me a "Friend of Dorothy", which is nice).

A year ago I wouldn't have gotten that joke

But learning about 'friends of dorothy' gave me a whole new perspective on the Mental As Anything song, Dorothy Parker's Hair...

Oh, and yes you would have to buy [some of] them, but many windows apps require paid upgrades to get Win7 versions that at least work, or make use of the Win7 features.

I'm not saying a Mac is for everyone. But, saying that you won't be able to find [comparable] applications that you use on Windows is probably not true.

Let's see, what do I use on my pc...

I play 2 MMO's, neither of which has a mac counterpart.
I create IIS .NET web applications (both for work and for enjoyment) and last I checked, .NET was for windows.
And I browse the internet (which I'll probably will find a mac able browser for )

So, I won't be able to find comparable applications I use on windows for 3 of the 4 things I use my PC for. So, the mac is not for me. (and just put aside for a moment that it is made by a company I refuse to buy things from...)

Oh, and that Win7? I'll not switch.

Which is why I am thinking about buying a cheapo laptop and hackintosh it

I'll keep windows on my stationary, but I would like to learn more about OSx, since I keep coming across mac-support on a more or less daily basis i really should learn more about it.

Well I've been in it 25+ years (except for a 2-year stint trying to make it as a writer) and I'm sick of it as well. I'm seriously looking for a change or at least a job that feels like it is doing some good for humanity and the planet. Haven't found it yet. Suggestions are welcome.

Anyone tried BootCamp or VMWare as a alternative workaround?

I don't think it's illegal, but ...

Apple bundle Mac OS X with every Mac sold, so new retail versions of Mac OS X are really upgrades for existing customers.

Therefore, installing retail Mac OS X on anything other than a Mac is using an upgrade version without having paid for the software in the first place.

Not illegal, but certainly not ethical.

Actually, you can buy a full version of OS X Snow Leopard also (I think it is called the Mac boxed set or something). It is meant for people that are still on Tiger. The upgrade price for SL is only for people that already have Leopard.

Also, I don't think violating a license agreement is really "illegal". (Yes, I know the whole civil vs criminal nit.)

I know Apple want's people to buy Apple hardware which is why they don't let you run OS X on any old PC. I think it is a two edged sword for them. Of course, if you could buy a PC with OS x you won't be buying an Apple. Of course not allowing OS x to run on commodity hardware ensures that OS x will always be a 10% or less share of the computing inventory which means less OS X software.

I certainly don't claim Mac is the be all and end all. I too am a .Net developer by day. However, I bought a Mac to broaden my technical horizons so to speak and do appreciate quite a bit about the Mac and OS X.

'nuff said.

BOb
