I used to work for them, I know better.

I think the problem is Comcast is "Upgrading" their broadband equipment and it's been in turmoil for the last 2-3 weeks. Before that is was rock solid!

Well, I'd be tempted given what I'm dealing with with Comcast! In fact I already threatened them with switching if they don't get their act together.

Y'know, I think I just realised how so many women get into a "Fine. I'll be over here, smouldering with resentment." kinda attitude. What's the effing point of politely listing your objections and issues re: a particular plan if the person you're talking to shows no sign of taking it in, or caring about it if they do?

So, like, FINE.

Now, see, I've tried this and they just ignore me. Subtlety is completely lost on anyone in my family. I prefer to be blunt and MAKE them care about what I'm saying. Do I end up being the B***H sometimes? You bet! Do I get my point across? ABSOLUTELY!!

I will NOT go quietly into that goodnight!

None. None whatsoever. So at that point I abandon politeness... (I've found I don't handle doing smouldering with resentment very well - it makes me too tense, which leads to stomach problems and migraines - so not worth the effort. Losing my rag, however, can be very cathartic)

I do usually start at subtle, and work up to being smacked in the face with a fish blunt. Or, if I'm at work, substitute laptop battery for fish.

You're a writer, so write. List numbered items and request a corresponding numbered response for each item (or put it in a spreadsheet with a column marked "response"). Use an email-trail. Email them later to clarify what their (non-existent) response to your raised issue was. If the person wants to discuss "face-to-face", take a piece of paper containing your items and ask that they address each one, write in their response, and then show it to them so they can confirm what they said, telling them that you'll transcribe it later on and email it to them and file it on the office server for future reference. The spoken word is fallible...plausibly deniable. Force it into the archival form of the written word, and dismissal, filibuster, ambiguity, evasion and verbal intimidation or emotional pressure are removed. People don't like not being able to say "I never said that", and will be more careful addressing issues, and take more care to address issues.

Saying this, as the IT security systems overseer, manager and enforcer at my previous job, this is how I ended up being "let go" (or "fired" as The Loved One hates me saying) - effectively for being an officious arsehole, despite it being my board-designated role.

I'm not bitter (the sudden urge to punch someone in the neck is, I'm sure, completely unrelated).

Cheers,
Marc

For me, less "Welcome" than "Goodbye", after about 19 years in IT. I'm lucky enough to be "retired" now, but the end and its hindsight sure left a bitter taste that made me never want to go back.

Now I don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
