Laura: not sure on whether to buy or not
 Quote:
I work for Astak and I always caution everyone that I may be biased. HOWEVER... using either the USB cable or a good card reader/writer... the eBook is into the device as fast as you can drag and drop. We have not seen any problem at all and this comment is news to me. Look, the Pocket PRO gives you 8 level grey scale, Adobe Digital Editions with pdf reflow, 20 formats (nobody else is even close), 20 languages, Text-To-Speech, a user-replaceable rechargeable battery, hyperlinks, an improved bookmarking system, a true Search Function, 16GB SD card slot, and the speed of the Epson Controller with 400MHz processor. THEN... we also throw in a great leather crush-resistant case with magnetic clasp and ear buds. INCLUDED!! This IS a terrific device. PLUS... if you buy you have 14 days AFTER you receive it for a full refund!! Plus, I am on here daily monitoring threads like this and responding and making good.

I use the supplied 1G SD card for all transfers anyway. The card is quick enough to pop out, and there are no problems with the SD reader.

Being in Australia (like you) the only *issue* for lack of a better word for me was the supplied USB power adapter was US styled pins. I had to decide whether to buy an adapter to convert the pins to AUS standard, or buy an AUS styled USB power adapter. If you don't want to do either the PP can be charged from the USB port on your computer (I bought a USB power adapter as I like to get away from my laptop and pack it up for a few days and get away from it). All I know is I can't recommend the PP enough - it is in my view a brilliant device.

I guess I'll just bite the bullet and get the Pocket Pro. Robert, do you know when you'll have black ones back in stock? |

You can get USB charger/adapter devices from cheapo stores like Crazy Clarkes, or Dollars and Sense, for about $10. I use one all the time to charge my MP3 player and PDA. Similar devices exist for cars power to USB. My PP is only days away hopefully. Can you use it - i.e. read a book, while it is charging?

Yep you can read your PP while charging. The manual does say that charge time will increase if being used while charging. I havent measured the USB cable that came with the PP, but it is long enough to have plugged in to the wall next to your chair and you read comfortably.

Just curious, but why is using an SD card quicker? The card reader is probably using USB 2.0, the Pocket Pro uses USB 2.0; Is the memory in the PP slower (for writing) then a SD card?

Also, I intend to have more than one SD card, so I'll just swap SD card to access a whole bunch of new stuff which I may have downloaded to the card earlier.

 You just reminded me!!

I knew I forgot to post something! Thank you!! Yes, the third shipment of both Black and Slate Blue will be in no later than Friday, November 6. We are likely hedging a bit and it may arrive (perhaps) earlier. Anyway, Friday is kind of a drop-dead date! And... do not bite bullets! They break teeth!! We want you to be happy with your new device. The Pocket PRO, despite the wacko wrinkling of the paint on shipment one (a wrinkling that will live in infamy) is still the best damned device out there and a pleasure to use. The reviews have all been more than good and the factory has told us they will committ suicide readily if ANY of these third shipment units are not perfect.

Soon, SD cards offered on our website.
 Quote:
Astak is owned by Team Research Inc. eBook Readers are a relatively new thing for us. We have been making SD cards for about 8 years now. Most of the maps that come with your GPS are no SD cards made by Team Research and the maps pre-loaded on by Team Research. We do about 2 million cards a month. SO... soon we will be offering SD cards on our (www.theEZreader.com)website. They should be a real bargain and we ship direct to your door. Yes, we build up to 32GB... but will likely only go to 8GB on our website. Demand higher? Let me know.
