With all of the people reading "Oryx and Crake" I feel like I should join in on the fun! Might have to wait til next month though, I've already spent too much this month on books!
Currently reading "The Guinea Pig Diaries" by A.J. Jacobs. I've read his two previous books and they always crack me up, and this one is no exception. I was reading it at lunch today and almost spit my punch all over my Reader ![]() |

We have some English translations of Stendhal, but they are not the same as reading the original. Le Rouge et Le Noir also has some funny passages. |

![]() Speaking of which, you'll likely have noted other authors here include in their signatures links to their work or website. Most folks here seem to like that, because it identifies you as an author (readers like writers, see ![]() Cheers, Marc |

Thanks for the excellent pointers. I've given it a try and hope it comes out looking decent. Stories I can tell, dialogue I can write (we're talking about after many drafts, of course), but this message board world still has its mysteries for me. Okay, now we'll see if what I did actually took! |

I'm working hard at finishing Antonia Byatt's "The Children's Book". Or hard and hard... It's very, very, very GOOD. I love it. Wow, what a book!
![]() But I have to finish soon, so I can read "The Road" by Sunday - I promised a discussion here ![]() |

Thanks pshrynk, The Bethie chapters were a lot of fun to write. Kind of took me by surprise that I had that sort of character in my repertoire. (Did I spell that right?) I hope you enjoy her and the rest of the characters of Boomerang. Alan |

Devil Jazz
I just finished reading "Devil Jazz" by Craig Forgrave. It was wonderful and hilarious. It's this modern good vs. evil battle before the Apocalypse. "J.C." wakes up without his memory, only with the distinct knowledge that the world will end in 7 days, and he suddenly acquires a disciple-like following. Marilyn Monroe, Vincent van Gogh, and Adolf Hitler are, in the meantime, sent by Satan to do his work: corrupt the innocent, the dreamers, and the youth.
It was so funny, and I read it in only a few days. I highly recommend it. |

I'm reading another paper book right now (it's in hardcover, and I had a good coupon - the ebook was more). "The Man Who Loved Books Too Much" by Allison Hoover Bartlett. It's about an antiquarian book thief, the guy who chases him down, and the author learning about the antiquarian book trade. So far it's great

Thanks to our very own Harry's superb work, I'm getting hooked on re-reading all the Dickens classics. Currently well into Harry's *Tale of Two Cities*. He's done a beautiful job and the e-read is every bit as satisfying as the half dozen times I've read the novel in hard copy -- from paperback to swish tooled hardback. Many thanks, Harry ... and, of course, Charlie. Neil

Recently finished the following:
The Ark by Boyd Morrison - Excellent, I was really surprised by it, pace was fast and the characters were interesting. Similar feeling to James Rollins. The Road and No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy - Both excellent books. The author definitely has a unique writing style which took a little time to get used to but I grew to love it. I like The Road a little better I think due to the fact I had already seen No Country for Old Men when it came out in theaters so I sort of new what to expect and surprisingly the movie was very faithful to the book, one of the few I can remember which was so close to the book. Both recommended. Current reading "Dark End of the Spectrum" by Anthony S. Policastro. About 150 page flips in on my Sony. So far so good, very interesting ideas and technologies in this one. Kevin |

Just read The Lost Symbol -- was thoroughly disappointed by the book, not saying he's a great author, but it didn't have the same entertainment value of the last two books in the series
