Basically, I too got caught by the Dan Brown fiasco - it let me "buy" it with a buywise club voucher, but when I came to download it, requested a new credit card check.

When I tried to do that, it got declined. I tried a second card - declined. Now my entire account is locked - I can't download anything at all, not even multi-format books.

By being bought by Barnes & Noble they have gone from one of the best places to get ebooks in the world to one of the worst.

I can certainly second that!

The publishing industry is going to great lengths to shoot itself in the foot - both feet even

their customer support has gotten worse imo, for some things I got an answer within a day like when I bought a non-restricted ebook a few months ago and the download link didn't work, for others I haven't gotten an answer at all like when I wrote and asked about cancelling my buywiseclub-membership

Not sure if this will still be useful for those of you who use Paypal at FW, but I managed to add a US postal address to my Paypal account (I'm outside US). The option wasn't available in the main Paypal site, but when I made a purchase at BooksonBoard and was directed to the Paypal payment page, there was the option to add another postal address. Besides my home country, US was the other choice. I don't know if this makes a difference but I created my Paypal account at the main site before the localised site for my country was launched. Anyway, the Paypal receipt shows the US address as my shipping address.

Then stop buying from them if they don't care about you. We've got a lot of books at CyberRead and we'll do our best to take care of you.

Also, I think you'll find that our prices are pretty competitive now.

Fictionwise recently sent me an email saying "we notice you haven't bought anything from us recently. Can we interest you in.........."

I replied with 2 words : "Geographic Restrictions".
Won't do any good at all but made me feel soooo much better!

GeoffC, I'm so jealous! I've also got a subscription which has been a waste of money but it's due to expire very soon - wish I'd thought of asking for a refund........bummer.

Clint, I noticed that your site also supports the .pdb format, making it an easy transition for many of us. Are the files on your site encrypted in a similar fashion to eReader & Fictionwise - based on the credit card number?

Another thing that I couldn't find is whether you're allowed to download a purchased book in 2 different file formats. Currently I am fine with .pdb but as some point in time, I may have to make the jump to epub.

And of course there is Geoff's question on CyberRead's policy on geographic restrictions.

No actual knowledge of what's happening at FW, but years ago I worked customer support at a company that was acquired & it's almost inevitable that service gets worse temporarily. Policies are changing so until the policy manuals get rewritten many more questions need to be referred 'up' to somebody who knows what the current policy is. That might explain the spottiness-some questions have already been resolved & the policy updated. Others have not yet been. I'd like to say stick in there, that things will get better, but I'm not hopeful. Response time will likely improve, but it seems to me that the general trend of the responses is downwards.

Unfortunately I don't like the way it manages my library. I do understand how difficult it would be to make a fully customizable library manager, but don't understand why it can't just deal with the directory structure & naming conventions as I have them. Comments on the web site lead me to think it's a control issue. (E.g. paraphrase: If Calibre manages your library then you don't need to look at the files.) Technically you have no need to clean your room either-but most people prefer it that way. Yeah, that's somewhat unfair to Calibre as its management is neither messy nor unreasonable, it's just not what I want.

But it is a nice format converter, at least.

The ebook industry is determined to shoot themselves in both feet aren't they? Unless you're american. It'll reach a point soon when the eReader gets put away & I'll go back to paperbacks, what a joke.
I agree except I think it's the publishers that are trying to kill off ebooks. Or maybe authors. Many people have commented here that it's the publishers who are insisting that geographic restrictions be enforced-but it's the authors who (technically) set those restrictions up in the first place.

The difference between technically & practically depends on how much the author is able to change the publisher's standard contract. In some cases, all the author would need to do would be to ask that ebook rights be excluded from geographic restrictions. If the publisher wants the book badly enough, they'd do it.

I just can't see how geographic restrictions, regardless of media, are in the best interests of the publisher-so I'm fairly certain that they got started by authors. Makes sense, at least-authors would want their books to be sold world-wide, but that usually meant (prior to ebooks) selling the rights to more than one publisher. And the geographic restrictions were developed to do that. So it was the authors who developed the restrictions and I feel certain that the authors could get them changed for ebooks-if they wanted to. (Not necessarily individual authors. A few might have that leverage, maybe, but most would need to work thru an organization. Is there a writer's union that provides advice to authors about contracting with publishers?)

Hi Guys.

I noticed a few questions about geographic restrictions and formats that we might be able to help you with. We have a great selection of ebooks in Epub, Pdf, ereader and msReader formats. About 150k total.
ALL our books are available worldwide. This was a concious decision we made as I myself was frustrated at geographic restrictions here in not-so-sunny Ireland. We have no clubs, subscriptions, rebates or similar, that I personally find confusing - just simple, clear pricing.
Also, one of the most important thing for me was customer care. as we are a small but independent company, we can guarantee a 24 hour response to all queries. We also have live help available on the site about 12 hours a day.

We are really passionate about eBooks and their future, and we hope to get that enthusiasm across to all, so if we can help in any way, please let us know.
