The justification is that at least some people will pay that amount for it, and Best Buy wants to make money. Once BB determines that the 800 has reached market saturation at that price point, they will cut the price a little and crow about it a lot. Eventually, they'll reach the MSRP and will ultimately put it on sale once a month for about $10 below that.

It's pretty much business 101 style tactics.

Yeah, that would be my guess too. Mark it up to get money out of the people that "have to have it now!", then offer a "discount" and lower it back to the actual MSRP later. The people who buy it at the MSRP are now thinking they got it on sale.

I will probably get one before Christmas, unless the review reveals some hidden defaults (or unless Sony somehow manage to resolve their touchscreen contrast issue for the 900)

Phbbbt, now it will have to be on sale for $350 or less for me to buy it. Since I know the MSRP is 399, I want discounts based on that, not the inflated price.

I hope that that is the justification. Considering iRex's past record, however, I doubt it. For instance, the price of DR1000S was $799 and it went up to $859 without any clear explanation from the company. With the upcoming new larger size eink devices, the price persists.

With DR800SG, I hope that is not the case, but ...

I'm going to be keeping a close eye on the DR800SG, but will only buy it after an annotation update comes like they claim it will, and only if it supports writing on all formats.

I think it's important to bear in mind that iRex doesn't owe you (or me or anyone else except their stockholders) an explanation. For a long time, I felt differently, but it's the simple reality of the matter.

With the DR 1000s, the situation is more akin to the case with the Kindle. There is only one distributor in the US (and I think it's the same in Europe though I'm not sure), and that guy's main business appears to be iRex readers. So iRex set the price there, and that's all there is to it.

We may be unhappy about it, but it's iRex's business, and I mean that very literally. It is their responsibility and their problem if things go badly, not ours.

I went to BB today and asked about it. They didn't have a clue, and couldn't find it in their computer. He even tried the website but couldn't even get the Sony readers to pull up. After much finagling of the computer, he found that two were supposed to get there the 16th of October, but there doesn't seem to be a sign of them, and no sign of when they WILL arrive. Evidently there is a problem with supply.

This poor guy worked for 5-10 minutes trying to find information for something he had already been told I wasn't buying, just wanting to see. He even apologized for not knowing more. He now knows more about readers than he ever thought he would know, since I spent the entire time talkig about all that I knew about them.

What's interesting also is that his was listed on BB's website but since Amazon had their blow out quarter it's been taken down and no sign of it anyway. At my local BB the Sony EBook display is a complete joke. Similar to what their original Apple displays use to be when they push it into one corner.

At this BB the Sony display was an endcap toward the front of the store, but the 600 was broken, wouldn't go to the main menu. They thought they had fixed it, but evidently not. Not encouraging if someone was interested in getting one.

I'm with you on that one. I was very dissapointed with my Iliad (which i've now got rid off) as Irex dropped the development of the software and it was very unfinished.
I'll wait and see if the add in the annotation functionality as they don't have a great record.

The main thing I want out of an ereader is to be able to annotate (in any format) and and have a dictionary lookup in any format. That seems to be a basic requirement of an ereader but no-one seems to be able to get that right. Here's hoping in this generation someone can do it.

I think it depends on what you plan on using one for. Neither annotating or dictionary lookup are features that I'm very interested in.

Hello. I am trying to choose an ebook reader (i've only ever owned an old reb 1200), and I've pretty much decided that I am going to place an order for the DR800SG as soon as it becomes available again on the Best Buy website. It seems to be the perfect size for me, and I like that it's a touchscreen and takes a memory card - and i couldn't care less that i need to use a stylus.
Does anyone know yet how easy it will be to look up a word in the dictionary? I actually like how that works on the Kindle 2 but i can't stand using the five way controller to navigate.
Does either the Iliad or the DR1000 have a decent dictionary function?

A great dictionary feature isn't necessary, but it would make the DR800SG just about perfect for me.

Thanks
