I mentioned in my posting that using Micropay with country USA was still working okay. You get the new IP based country check only if you want to pay with a credit card (to get those rebates).

By the way, you can use a service like "www.hidemyass.com" to circumvent the credit card bookshelf check. After downloading the book once, the check will be gone.

Depends on the book, some books still present the credit card check even when paying by MicroPay with a US address.. I guess some publishers are pushing harder on this than others.

I was a bit unclear in my previous posting.
We are talking here about two different checks.
1. For some books you get a extra credit card check instead of a download link at your bookshelf, after paying for the book.
2. My original posting was about a new check I noticed. When I tried to pay with my Dutch credit card using an USA address (which always worked okay), my payment was not accepted. The country I used when paying with my credit card (USA) was compared with the country of my IP address (The Netherlands), and because these were different my payment was not accepted.
I had to use a VPN service (alwaysvpn) to get my payment accepted (the VPN service lets me login to Fictionwise with an USA IP address).
Using www.hidemyass.com would probably also have worked, but I did not want so send my credit card details using a free site like that (this is just how I feel, I have found no negative information about www.hidemyass.com).

You'll find it at Diesel-ebooks.com.
I go there now when books are restricted at Fictionwise !
Price can be quite high, though...

There's also cyberread.com. They're not cheaper, but I have found books at their site that was not available elsewhere.

I have bought the book yesterday at Fictionwise using the usual workaround without a problem.
Valid USA address, country USA, using my Dutch Visa card to get the 100% rebate, worked fine. No proxy or VPN needed.

thanks

can't do much about the price, and with my impatience (hate waiting for books to arrive due to long shippingtime) I'll probably end up buying it anyway lol

I do not know what kind of error message you get.
Recently when I bought another book, my credit card payment was not accepted because of my location. In that case they checked the country of my IP-address. For buying that book I have bought a prepaid USA VPN account at www.alwaysvpn.com (just $8,50). Using this alwaysvpn account I could buy the book without a problem.
This only happened with this one book. All books after this one I could buy without a problem (including the J.D. Robb novel), so I am not sure if you are having the same problem.

I used hidemyass today to get around this geographic restriction on the bookshelf downloads so it's still working. It then reverted the credit card check to my original (non-US) credit card. This workaround might not last for long so I'm done with Fictionwise. Thanks to these short-sighted and antiquated restrictions I'm off to #Bookz.

Anyone got a decent contact at fictionwise who actually replies?

I've been "mailing" their customer support for days now and don't get any responses.

Basically, I too got caught by the Dan Brown fiasco - it let me "buy" it with a buywise club voucher, but when I came to download it, requested a new credit card check.

When I tried to do that, it got declined. I tried a second card - declined. Now my entire account is locked - I can't download anything at all, not even multi-format books.

By being bought by Barnes & Noble they have gone from one of the best places to get ebooks in the world to one of the worst.
