I am not convinced that avoidance of this particular DRM scheme will come at such a huge cost to me.

Wow, I can't believe the only way to go through your library is that cover flow thing. That's just awful. At least on the Kindle you can see a dozen or so titles on a page.

But, if you are saying... "I don't like this type of DRM so I am not going to use it." I would say that is certainly your choice. BOb

And with most ebook readers, there's the additional problem of how they get the author's name. Metadata is inconsistent--some publishers consistently arrange "lastname, firstname," but others (especially small publishers) use "firstname lastname," and freebies often have author names that are actually the name of the computer operator who formatted the Quark XPress file. (Nothing like downloading a free PDF and having it show up in the Reader as "aat small.qxp" with author "Lyn." Unless it's getting one that shows up as "15462009.v4-fin.qxp.") I'm sure their system will work well with books bought at their store. (Especially since very likely nobody will be buying 4,000 books from their store.) The question is how well it'll work for books from other sources, and how much effort the Nook owner will need to put into managing the library. A *good* system would let the owner click on a book, click on "edit metadata" (or "edit properties," so's not to confuse the non-techies who have no idea what "metadata" is) and change title & author to whatever they liked, to be stored in the Nook's memory. I suspect, though, that if they'd thought that far ahead, they'd've created a tag or folder system.

Concerning credit card DRM. What stops you from requesting a new card with a new number and then distribute all the books you have bought with the old number?

That's why it also includes the name on the card. That way they who the files belong to and can start investigating and or legal action.

Nothing, but It seems unlikely that someone would actually do this. It's too much trouble to drop a card and get a new one just for the sake of distributing a DRM locked book. It's more likely that someone will simply figure out how to strip DRM from the file, and distribute that.

But I see, I got the impression from people writing about this scheme that it was OK (according to the seller) to give a book to a friend if you was willing to give away the credit card number. But that was just my misunderstanding.

I've got to say, I really don't think people buying ebooks are the ones that are pirating them, are they? BOb
