I may have a 'hint' on potential formatting strategy:

From an Adobe Blog:

Adobe and Barnes & Noble announced today that they are working together to standardize the open EPUB and PDF eBook formats and collaborating on a content protection standard based on Adobe and Barnes & Noble technology. This collaboration will make Barnes & Noble the most portable and compatible eBookstore and provide customers with the ability to access digital content from thousands of content providers that is protected with Adobe technology. Soon enough, customers who use the Adobe Reader Mobile software development kit will also be able to purchase and read content from BN.com, the world's largest eBookstore.

Looks like Adobe's Epub may have hope with B&N after all?!

I saw somewhere that when you lend a book the recipient has access to the book for 14 days, and while they have access to the book you cannot access it. After the lending time period expires they no longer have access and you regain access to your book.

I'm hoping the information on lending out your books only once is a misinterpretation. I hope that what is really meant is that you can only lend the book to one friend at a time, but once the book reverts back to your possession that you can lend it to someone else. That's my hope anyway.

In the B-roll, the search keyboard (qwerty in grid format) is different from the lending keyboard (qwerty with staggered format like a real keyboard). Most likely the lending interface is written by another company (adobe?).

While it's true that formats can be easily converted, It misses the point. My point is that a single format forces the industry to compete in the market. They *have* to make the DRM more appealing to the consumer, or they lose the sale to someone else. With a multitude of formats, the DRM is inherently going to vary. You're not going to get a single DRM or even a single type of DRM across a broad spectrum of sold formats or devices. While format conversion is easy, it's an extra step that consumers shouldn't have to take, and adds confusion for novices. (I'm thinking of my parents here)

I absolutely agree with you that server-based DRM is problematic in it's entirety, and I'm not defending ePub as the best format, but it seems to be where the industry is headed so I would gladly support ePub with a DRM that's already established rather than the same format with a different DRM creating yet another branch of explanation on why you have to do it "this way" for one store and "that way" for another store.

You do realize your credit card number and name are not anywhere in the ebook and there is no risk of someone recovering it in any way it they have the ebook file or your reader?

And once keyed it is encrypted. There is no way to retrieve the credit card number from the file, just like you can't retrieve a password. It is used as a key to encrypt with.

I just registered on the B&N Nook blog and asked the following question.

Does the Nook support folders or some other means of navigating a large number of ebooks?

I'd appreciate it if any of you would be willing to go to this blog and click the "laurel" at the bottom of any post to which you want an answer, and hopefully someone at B&N might address them.

Some more info I found on lending from cnet (emphasis mine) --

Lending does work from Nook to other devices, as I indicated earlier. However, they noted that some books are lendable and others are not, per the wishes of the publishers.

Lending works similar to in the physical world. If you have lent a book to someone else, you don't have access to it while it has been lent.

Just went to B&N website, clicked on a book, clicked on ebook version, clicked on "Learn More" and here is the first paragraph:

eBooks, also known as electronic books, are the digital equivalent of printed books. Barnes & Noble eBooks can be read on the iPhone/iTouch, Blackberry, or PC and Mac computers. Please check back for an expanded list of other supported devices.

I guess the Nook hasn't made prime time yet.
