It looks like the Nook is reintroducing some of the things Amazon removed from the Kindle 1 (IMHO a bonehead move on Amazon's part). The Nook supports an SD card, it has a replaceable battery, and you can create your own screen savers with standard JPG files.

However, the Kindle 2 is thinner, lighter, and has a longer battery life.

Screen cover built in like the 700? Or is it an exposed e-ink panel?

If it's not covered, then expect lots of squooshed screen. Touch panel right below a ZOMG FRAGILE vizplex panel = Smashy Smashy.

Anyone seen one in person yet?

I think B&N also has the advantage of support for other devices for their ebooks using the eReader DRM/format you can read the ebooks on a PC, a Mac, an iPod Touch, Blackberry, etc.

Although, one thing that does seem to be missing (compared to Kindle and PRS600) is a dictionary lookup.

It lists a dictionary as on of the features on the comparison chart.

I guess I missed that, it is not listed on the tech spec page.

I know some were asking about International sales, from the FAQ...
Quote:
Q. I don't live in the U.S. Can I buy a nook?
X No. At this time, nook is not for sale outside the U.S.

Some of the important bits from the FAQ:

Quote:
Can I read my nook's eBooks on other devices like my mobile phone?

X Yes, you can read your eBooks across a wide range of devices in addition to your nook. All you need to do is download the free Barnes & Noble eReader app on your iPhone and iPod touch, BlackBerry® smartphone, or Windows® and Mac® laptops and desktop computers. And the eBooks purchased from BN.com will sync between your nook and other reading devices with the Barnes & Noble eReader app, so you always return to the last page you read.

Which languages are supported on nook?

X English is the only language currently supported on nook. Your nook does not support eBooks in other languages at this time, but will display PDF documents in different languages.

Can I lend eBooks from my nook?

X Yes. With our new LendMe™ technology, you can now share from nook to nook. But it doesn’t stop there. Starting Nov. 30th, you can lend to and from any device with the Barnes & Noble eReader app, including PC, Mac OS®, BlackBerry®, iPhone™ and iPod® touch. All you need to know is your friend’s email address. You can lend many of your eBooks one time for a maximum of 14 days. When you use our LendMe™ technology, you will not be able to read your eBook while it is on loan, but you always get it back.

Can I use my nook while traveling abroad?

X Yes, when you travel abroad, you can read any files that are already on your nook. You can connect to Wi-Fi hotspots that do not use proxy security settings, such those commonly used in hotels, and download eBooks and subscriptions already in your online digital library. You cannot, however, purchase additional eBooks and subscriptions.

What File Formats does nook support?

X Nook supports all eBooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers sold at Barnes & Noble.com. You can also load many other files, including MP3s and PDFs, as well as ePub and PDB files.
You can also load images for wallpaper and screensavers using the JPG, GIF, PNG, or BMP formats.

I don't live in the U.S. Can I buy a nook?
X No. At this time, nook is not for sale outside the U.S.

Can I return my nook?

X Yes. You can return nook within 14 days of receipt. Either call 1-800-THE-BOOK (843-2665) for a return authorization or return it to any Barnes & Noble store. A 10% restocking fee will be charged to customers returning a non-defective device that has had its shrink wrap removed and/or seal broken.

The tech spec page is kinda goofy it doesn't even list their own eReader/B&N format under supported files types.

it says this under support:

. What File Formats does nook support?
X Nook supports all eBooks, eMagazines and eNewspapers sold at Barnes & Noble.com. You can also load many other files, including MP3s and PDFs, as well as ePub and PDB files.

You can also load images for wallpaper and screensavers using the JPG, GIF, PNG, or BMP formats.

but under tech specs it says:
Supported file types:
* PDFs load easily and look great.
* PDFs, MP3s and graphics load to your nook from your computer or micro SD card.
* Use JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP files to create personal screensavers.

I have a Kindle2, which I love, but was thinking about a Sony 300 so I could read books from the Library, but now this B&N Nook has me thinking. Does anyone know if you will be able to read books from the Library on it?

*sigh* .. as much as I loathe the term "Kindle Killer" (because every new device that's come out the last two years has billed themselves as that, or been called that by someone else), I think this might actually be it.
It fixed most of Kindle's screwups, added openness (pc, mac, BB...), has the wifi for instant connectivity, and so on. The downsides I'm seeing are so far no hint of folder support (which isn't a downside for *everyone*, but it is for me) and limited format support-(again, this isn't a dealbreaker for everyone). With ePub, eReader, and PDF, plus the customizability (is that a word?) for the screensaver, which Kindle made you work for, plus the LendMe feature, I think they've got a winner.

Not unless the ePub & PDF support is ADE (Adobe Digital Editions) which at this point it doesn't look like it is.

Hmmm, definitely had their website written by someone not using a reader.

The cynic in me keeps noticing that formats listing PDF, PDF and, let's see...PDF. But you can load other files like epub and pdb onto the memory. It just never mentions if you can read them.

Times like this I am so grateful that in this community SOMEONE will have this thing roughly 3 seconds after it hits the shelves and in 30 it will be out charging from their power socket in their car on the way home to let us all know how well it works (or doesn't).

It does sound pretty good at this point. Add to that the ability to check it out in store which I think will be a biggie for a lot of people. I know you can buy a K and return in 30 days with no restocking fee (and this is only 14 days plus a restocking fee if opened), but some folks don't want the hassle.
