I can't fathom why anyone would buy $150 for this when you can get the presumably lighter and thinner version for $170. I'd pay $20 more for the features in the non-lite version. Which leads me to speculate if the deep discounting will continue and it'll retail for $99. Or... the discounts are soon to end so buy it while you can.

Well, the reason I'd consider it is for the fact that it uses AAA batteries. I already have a bunch of rechargeable AAA batteries and being able to swap out batteries is advantageous in situations where one just can't get to a working outlet to recharge every few days. Although I'd probably wait until I found it somewhere for a 20 to 30 percent discount.

It's good to know that they can do DRM. My major concern is whether they can and will extend the eReader DRM (B&N) functionality to the current line of Jetbooks...

:-)

Not to mention Adobe DRM so that we can download and read library books.

The Ectaco jetBook Lite with AA-Batteries actually looks pretty good to me. I prefer user-replaceable batteries to proprietary lithium batteries, and some of the functions mentioned in the video clip (search function, dictionary support, etc.) are not even available on significantly more expensive units.

A key issue is lack of WiFi support - I like having an Internet connection, and have thus been closely following units such as the Kindle and Txtr. But the argument has been made here and elsewhere that to become completely immersed in a book, easy Internet access is actually more of a distraction than a benefit. I'm beginning to see the sense of this line of thinking, and am now more seriously considering a lack of WiFi as a benefit rather than as a disadvantage.

Because they own eReader format and don't have to pay licensing fees for its use.

This device is new, but not that new. It's been around as the Chinese model M218C. Looks like jetBook is rebranding it as they did the other Chinese reader.

A thought on the battery compartment: As someone mentioned before, it might actually make a nice handhold. I have a netbook with a similar battery bulge which makes it easy to carry around. Look at the similarities between the jetBook Lite and the EB-1150. What they should do is make an option in the firmware to rotate 180 degrees and voila! Nice grip for either hand. Notice that the compartment is textured? No coincidence IMO...

Same article but in English and video on engadget.com website:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/18/e...im-cheapest-us

According to the comments they started sell jetBook-Lite for 99 Euros in Europe that is twice cheaper if compare with other eBook readers available in Europe.

Not the most desirable choice for who? I am rather excited about this: over 1 million B&N books to choose from. The Jetbook already supports epub. Assuming that Ectaco gets the DRM support for B&N, this is an ideal situation for Jetbook owners, even better than the new Nook, which has the inferior e-ink screen.

I think it's noteworthy that in only 3 days this thread has 1,267 views, despite that fact that the jetBook does not have an eInk screen, and its forum has relatively few threads, few posts, and from what I gather few owners.

I take this to reflect a great interest in replaceable batteries and low price.

I think I just got checked. I thought BN was going epub too, but I think it was said there just going to have that as another format.
Although the inferior screen comment might not when friends.

Oh they are going ePub. With their own DRM, but ePub allows that. And when the Q1 2010 SDK hits, the other ADE-using readers will be able to support the DRM with a firmware upgrade - that'll be a good test of which companies are serious about supporting a reader line.
