Yet another dual screener - Spring Design

http://gizmodo.com/5384709/spring-de...-dual-displays What worries me though is the words: and patented dual screen interaction technology, the Duet Navigator™. I mean looking at this horribly designed device it is certain, they did it just to fill the patent. Will it affect B&N or otherwise? Last edited by dmikov; 10-19-2009 at 10:03 AM. |

The rumor/assumption is that the B&N reader is a variant on this product, not a competitor.

Even the name is hideous: Alex. What kind of name is that for an ebook reader. Not exactly catchy, is it?

It does look better than the first Kindle at least, and the name sounds OK to me, but I'm not sure about usability. Where would you put your fingers to hold it? Anyway I don't see much use for two screens myself, seems like just an expensive gadget to me at first sight...

Wait and see: Hopefully it won't be one that does two things poorly rather than one thing well. The main screen looks too small for my tastes, but there's no way to know yet. |

Can't wait for tomorrow to see what the B&N reader REALLY looks like. Hopefully it's more like the Gizmodo pictures than like this ugly thing. I just hope the B&N announcement has some substance to it (specs, price, availability date etc.) and isn't just another "tease".

Nah-- "Alex" is one of those names that can be for a male or a female-- and this reader has both types of displays and thus is a bit of a hermaphrodite... so, yeah, the name works. I gotta say, I don't hate it (the reader.) |

Not much I can say. It's a dumb design. The companies don't seem to be thinking about how people would hold or use ebook readers...they just rip off some vague phone/dmp design characteristics and assume the size difference is irrelevant, hoping the new unnecessary gimmickry takes the market. It'd be fascinating to sit down and talk with some of the think(?) tanks that are working on these things...

I really don't see how they could really get a patent on having two screens on a device, there is prior work for that. Having one screen to display info, and the other (lower) screen being to control the device has one famous device that has been out for years (The DS).
