I would be careful about the Pocket Pro. The peeling paint issue that plagued the first colored PP are now reported on the supposedly ''all fixed'' second batch, and on black Bebook Mini.

I looked too at all the 5" readers and purchased a 300. Now waiting for it.

It may comes down to your degree of tolerance for crash. Personally I don't want anything to distract me from reading, so a buggy devices is a no-go especially as Booken has a very poor history for FW fix.

Mind you, Sony too should have fixed their epub support long ago too, but anyway I plan to use the LRF format on it as I already have a 505.

I have a 505 and while it doesn't justify ePub, it works very well and I don't mind the left justification. I like the look with the fonts I have chosen more so then LRF.

I cannot speak about the current Opus. Ask if anyone recently purchased one and find out if it still locks up.
The PocketPro comes with several choices of fonts installed. The user's manual describes how to add new ones and current owners report that that feature works properly.

I think I can tolerate the occasional freeze, especially if it's solvable with a soft reset (not having to mess with battery covers etc.).

To be honest the Opus is still at the top of my list. Compared to the 300 the Opus:

Pros:
  • Has a nicer form factor (at least to me)
  • Has a nicer UI
  • Seems to be slightly more responsive
  • Has more internal storage space
  • Has the option for a SD card
  • Handles ePub better (based on feedback)

Cons:
  • More expensive
  • Freezes

That's for use with file formats like text and Mobipocket, though, isn't it? Doesn't work for ePub files, to the best of my knowledge. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.

If you plan to keep the thing for a while, another "plus" for the Opus is the user-replaceable battery. I always change devices long before any Lithium Ion battery has a chance to "die", but I know that the non-replaceable Sony battery is a concern to some people.

If I get a reader (regardless if it's an Opus/300) it will have to last me at least around 2-3 years. Hopefully by then something considerably better will have come along.

Thanks for all the input from everyone. I've made my decision and placed an order for the Opus. It's more expensive but offers a nicer UI and better features.

Hopefully I won't regret it.

Just to let you know what I think of the Astak Pocket Pro. Mine arrived Saturday and tomorrow it is going back for a refund. 1.Menu print is too small for me 2.It takes 2-3 presses of most keys to make any changes, so you just sit and wait and wait. 3. Reader turns itself on when you are sure you have turned it off.(That is most irritating when you think it is being charged and it isn't) No way is this reader intuitive. Guess we have been very spoiled by our Kindles.

I did buy a Red Sony 505 on eBay tonight. Wish I had done this before wasting $20 on all the shipping back and forth for the Astak

The ePub conversion using Calibre didn't work, but the conversion using Lib2Go works fine on the Astak.
