I strongly suspect it is from internal generated 'heat' (low as it may be) of the unit that is causing this. The units do not show any crinkling until it has been used. Bob reported that Astak leaves them on the bench and check them daily for this, but no one turns them on to use them.

Here in South Australia, the air is ultra dry, with mid teens in temp, yet my first unit crinkled after usage. It would smooth out a bit after shutting it down for some hours, and then crinkle again after a few hours of usage.

If the device works without the leftover parts, then the left over parts are not needed and are just ballast.

I know that these corners were barely even touched by me. I normally hold the device with my left hand, and the 2 buttons on the left side, where my thumb constantly rests, is showing no signs of warping.

The bubbling must have happened today, in the last hour or three. No idea what atmospheric situations have caused it. I have been inside the office all day, a very comfortable 73 degrees.

If you return it now you will likely end up with a defective unit again. Waste of time. The problem haven't been corrected, it was probably just more acute in the first batch as they were rushed.

I would fix it myself or ask for a refund.

Good points...

Only prob I see with with fixing it yourself is if they have a problem with something as simple as the freaking case, what corners were cut on the guts of the thing?

Now it's not an Astak only thing as the Bebook Mini is having the same case issue...I would return and get a refund...I mean if you are going to spend so much time waiting, why not look into devices without these probs, then again for people who have not had probs, they really seem to like the Bebook Mini/PP OEM re-badged clones.

There will be sub-$199 readers before the end of the year that are at least as featured and, gawds no less stable...I hope.......as these current readers...right now there really seem to be QC issues with the actual plant(s) that makes the readers.

I returned my Blue one for a Black one and so far I have no problems with the paint, so I think the return and go for Black is the answer. All are now from the second batch that came in, so the quality might be better.

The Pocket Pro is a great reader and there is no currently available one that suits my needs better. The Barnes and Noble reader looks interesting, but there is not enough information about it's price, features and availability yet.

Oh no! Do you know if your replacement is from the second shipment? Robert said that the entire first shipment had a rush on the paint job so perhaps they are all susceptible to wrinkling? If no one reports problems from the second shipment on, perhaps a third (bummer!) replacement will be the charm? Just a thought....

I wish we could just get a black or white shell sent to us or buy one. Refinishing the cover isn't the hard part. The hard part is refinishing the buttons, especially since they are attached to the front cover.

I agree and think there is a lot of 'over the top' almost misleading marketing going on here. Including the bogus contest stuff.

I believe that comment was given after my replacement had been shipped. I am of the thought that my replacement was from the first shipment, and that it had time to cure more than the rest. However, the plastic underneath the rubber shell most likely wasn't sanded, and it still shiny smooth, which makes the rubber shell not fully adhere to the plastic.

It also may be that they shiny coating is actually a sticky glue layer to bond the rubber coating. I don't really know.

I checked my PEZ this morning, and the wrinkles havent spread. Then again the unit was in sleep mode all night. I'll wait until after the weekend to see if the wrinkles spread, then decide. Also, most freight companies do not ship on the weekend, so even if it left today, there's be 2 days that it would most likely be just sitting.

I turn my unit off and the newest bubbles are in the lower right-hand corner and on the number 0 button. But I live in a very humid area in southern Georgia so I'm sure that doesn't help it any.
