Definitely don't try the standard USB mini cable plugged into one of those USB charger plugs! I don't know about on the 300/600 but on the 505 this actually drains the battery rather than charges. I use it for other things like my MP3 player but it definitely does not like power via USB too much.
I went for the cheap PSP charger option which works fine. |

I have a PRS 600, but I assume that supply requirement for the 300 is the same.
I was given a version 1 TomTom unit recently and the mains charger and car charger both give out 5.2V (less a few 10's of mV, as I checked it before plugging it in!) and the contact is correct for the 600. I hope that this may be of assistance to others. |

I also have the charger for my Razors. While it will recharge my phone and I can use the same cable to download photos from my camera to my laptop, it won't charge my reader.

Treven; One of us is confused. My Motorola RAZR chargers are strictly AC to DC converters. The US version has folding power prongs. Although the mini USB plug will fit in some cameras, there is no possibility of using it to transfer data from the camera to a laptop, and it will definitely not charge the Sony readers.

I may be a little off here, but as far as I can tell, the mini USB will only charge through the computer and the only one that will charge through the AC plug is the one that's round.
This can then be plugged into a USB wall charger to charge the reader. If the mini USB is connected to the book for any reason ( to conect to the computer or just because you attached a mini USB by mistake for no reason, even if it's not connected to anything on the other end) it will go through the whole process of loading. Sometimes taking a long time, depending on how much you have in your reader. It onl charges through the computer and NOT through a wall charger. If the round charger tip is used, it charges, and that's it. And it doesn't go through the loading process. Seems much easier to me. |

Radio Shack Charger
I've been using the Radio Shack charger w/interchangeable tips (6V, 800 ma) for years with Sony readers. It comes with one free tip and the PRS Readers use Size B. Works very well - costs $19, available almost everywhere.
Also, it' a myth to let the batteries run down - that was true for NiCads but letting lithium batteries run down will damage them - you can check this out by Google |

The RS charger is pretty pricey. ANY Sony PSP charger will work--and they are available really cheap everywhere (department stores, video game stores, etc.).
The best option IMO are the PSP power/data cables in post #15 of this thread. Very cheap, and one cable lets you charge from ANY usb port, as well as handling data transfer for the Reader or any other device. |

We already have a USB wall wart so I bought the following cable...
![]() from Meritline for $5.99 and that includes free shipping. The plug with the yellow tip os for the PSP and wll also work on the Sony Readers. http://www.meritline.com/5-in-1-usb-...--p-28335.aspx |

One thing to note - almost all recent Sony devices which charge by USB use the Host Mode to charge... including the PS3 wireless controllers, keyboards, Bluetooth headsets, and even the PSP Slim. This means that the PS3 AC Adaptor (model # CECHZA1) should work for the PRS-300 and PRS-600, since they`re also Sony devices which follow this same ÙSB Host Mode charging`method. They output at 5V and 500mA, the same as a regular USB port, but with intelligent mode on by default, and can host two USB devices at the same time.

I just picked up this charger at Best Buy for $8 and it works great! A much better deal than the ebook charger.
Thanks for pointing it out, -Kurt Quote:

I don't understand why anyone would pick up a PS3 AC adapter instead of a PSP adapter or PSP power cable. Besides being no more expensive, the PSP charger/cable charges the Reader FASTER and lets you use the Reader while charging.

It's not my cup of tea personally, but for those who want to charge with USB, the Sony PS3 adapter provides that option, if you can live with it constantly rescanning the database after unplugging from the adapter. |

You can buy a PSP adapter, which looks the same, and is the same voltage and current output as the PS3 AC adapter, for less than $4 US on eBay - and that includes shipping. It's actually less expensive that some of the USB to DC power plug adapter cables. I wouldn't be surprised if the eBay items were made in the same Chinese factory as the adapters with Sony's logo. If it makes you feel better, or more secure, to pay ~7 times more for a charger with Sony printed on it, then go for it. Sony appreciates your patronage.
