Also, even when I don't have the software installed at all (because I tried removing it completely) the install wizard tells me that it's already running.

Needless to say, I found this thread, downloaded 2.5 again, and things are now working great again.

But I'm amazed that the older version works while the new one does not.
Set compatibility for Vista SP 2 and it should work. V3.0 for some reason doesn't recognize Win 7 and needs to see either Vista or XP.

I think mainly two things...

1. To support the new PRS-600 and the annotations.

2. To allow for Adobe DRM without needing to install Adobe Digital Editions software at all.

So, if you don't have a 600 and you are happy with ADE then for you there probably was no point.

3. Version 3.0 allows fully-justified text for ePUB files. I'm pretty sure version 2.5 did not have full justification for ePUB.

Meh. How often do you read the ebooks on the PC? But, thanks for adding to the list.

I hardly ever read ebooks on the PC, but I often review the layout and formatting on the PC. After creating an epub file with calibre, or modifying an epub with Sigil, I use the Sony eBook Library to view the epub because it simulates exactly how each page will appear on the Sony Reader.

Actually, it doesn't. ePub on the software will support full justification, but it doesn't on the Sony.

Sorry, I meant to say that I use eBook Library v2.5 to review the layout and formatting since it renders a page as it appears on the Sony Reader. When (if?) the Sony Reader gets its next firmware update it should support full justification and hopefully page renderings will be exactly replicated by eBook Library v3.0.
