Initially, they charged more than Amazon does for Kindle books, but they seem to be matching Amazon now.

Any thoughts on this?

Yes, they have become more competitive on the whole often having the same or similar pricing to Amazon on 'Bestsellers'. It really can go from book to book as far as who's cheapest.

I also just bought the Sony PRS-600. I check the Sony eBook Store, which is a partnership with Borders. I found that the prices are pretty competitive AND they have sales all the time. In fact I just bought Dan Brown's, The Lost Symbol, for $9.99, which is the price as Amazon's for the Kindle. Click on the Bargain-Priced and Bundles for the best deals. the Bargain-Priced category includes free books as well as those that are only a couple of dollars or less. On the right hand side of Sony's/Border's eBook Store is a link to the Google Bookstore. You can pick up some free books there.

DeeGee, I have downloaded free books from Google and from the Gutenberg Project. As far as pricing of other books, I never bought a pbook until it was released to the mass market (paperback). The cover price is usually $8. Amazon frequently offers a 4 for the price of 3 deal which brings the price to $6 a book and with free shipping. So, $9.99 for The Lost Symbol is too much IMO. I know it's not out in paperback yet, but I can wait. I'm finding plenty to read as free or very low cost ebooks. I'm now reading the Outlander which I got from the Sony store for around $3.

What I'm bothered by is that both Sony and Amazon claim that their price for ebooks is less than that of paper books. That's only true if you compare the price to the hard cover in many cases. I don't think that's a reasonable comparison since an ebook doesn't give you an attractive cover with the paper jacket and you can fill your library shelves with it. So the fairest comparison is to the mass market pbook version.

As I posted in another thread, it will be interesting to see what happens when Google gets into the business of selling books. They have something like seven million books scanned already.

Directebooks

Hi Guys.
I must say, I hate all these rebates, coupons etc . Maybe being european, I dont quite understand/trust them!
these days, i'm buying from directebooks, com. Theres a lot of pdfs and epubs for you Sonyphiles out there! Pretty good selection with decent prices. Best thing is there are no restrictions on what country you are in. This is great as I found it difficult to get books over here in the UK. I cant understand why publishers are stopping readers buying their books!

Welcome to MobileRead.

I choose to buy from Amazon and Fictionwise because I find their prices much better than directebooks.com. Directbook's prices are way too high, and I don't like paying more money for ebook. If rebates and coupons lower the price, then great. Personally, I enjoy rebates and coupons. If paying more money at directbooks is the way to go, then I recommend all individuals pay more money and not less, and that they should shop at those places that charge more money.

However, if that website works for you, then that's the one you should frequent.

Again, welcome to MobileRead. Please check out the Forums. Also, we have free, lovingly-produced public domain books and Creative Commons titles in many formats.

HAVE FUN!

What's wrong with coupons/rebates? I am European and I use them all the time, not only for shopping e-books.

I don't think geography has anything to do with it. Judging from the number of companies that use them, coupons and rebates must be popular in France

It's only a question of personal taste. I personally hate them, because they make me feel that I am pressured into buying things that I don't really need, and they raise the doubt that if I buy from that same company without any reduction, I am paying more than I should. I want to buy what, where and where I choose, and I resent shops that are trying to influence my choices
