Just finished _Verdant Skies_. A very good story... if a bit light on the antagonist side. I actually preferred _The Lens_.

I'll have more to say about _Verdant Skies_ once we open the (annex) book club thread later this month.

Guess I will read _Flash Forward_ next for the book club.

But, I am really itching to read Gibraltar Stars!!! I'm a little surprised to see the eBook on the Authors site is $7.50 though. I wonder if he does that so as not to undercut retailers that sell it too.

I guess _The Pillars of the Earth_ will have to be pushed back again.

Recently finished the following books:

The Day After Tomorrow by Allan Folsom - decided to pick this up after some recommendations here. Great thriller, kept me guessing til almost the end.

Velocity by Dean Koontz - another good read that had some twists and turns throughout.

Rough Country by John Sandford
- I have read all of John Sandford's Prey Series and have now read all of his spinoff Virgil Flowers books. All great reads, recommended to anyone who likes crime thrillers. This one was great as always. The 100% micropay rebate helped with the $20+ price tag but I figured it was basically free with the rebate.

Now I am about halfway through Flashforward, october's selection for the reading club here. So far I am enjoying it and plan to check out the first couple episodes of the tv show once I am done with the book(I have em pvr'd)

Oh, Pillars of the Earth is one that I think you will enjoy, don't push it back too long! I picked it up a couple years ago after a friend recommended it to me, not expected all that much. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down.

Now I am reading (about a third of the way through) "Let the Right One In". The plot is interesting but fairly creepy, and I have to say that the writing style is a little too pared down for my taste - however, that might have something to do with the translator as well. Still an interesting, if creepy, read.

Next on my list is Margaret Atwood's The Year of the Flood, and I am considering putting "Let the Right One In" aside mid-read to get this one started! I really enjoyed Oryx and Crake, which is set in the same world.

I finished the Poisonwood Bible, which I really liked - and like more and more the more I think about it and look at it from all the angles. Then I read Fool Moon (Book 2 of the Dresden series) which was light and easy and now I am reading Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffeneger which I have been eagerly awaiting having been a big fan of The Time Traveller's Wife. So far it's different but it is starting to get good.

I just started "Murder on the Orient Express" by Agatha Christie. I haven't read a Poirot novel that someone else was narrating yet, so this is a little different.

I just finished reading The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke (2003), and I have to say I found it incredibly interesting in how she debunks a lot of popular myths about what's "wrong" with american spending patterns. Rather than being a problem of frivolous spending on appliances, clothes, etc, she shows that nearly all personal bankruptcies are due to either enormous mortgage payments, or costs incurred related to healthcare. Rather than two income families being more secure (because of the much-touted 'extra' income), they are in fact at more risk, because they take out mortgages based on the assumption that both workers will continue to have jobs for the duration of the mortgage (and because house prices have risen to reflect those new incomes, because people are able to bid more), and as such, as soon as something goes wrong, all goes wrong. If you want to get a sample of what she tells in the book, watch this (starts at about 8mins in). It's a very quick read, but it summarizes and refers to (via notes) enormous amounts of research that were used in writing it.

Just finished "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" -- I didn't feel the ending quite lived up to the promise of the beginning but still an excellent book.

Picked back up "Hard Times" - Dickens.

I posted in another thread that I had just finished this book, so I hope this doesn't count as a "double posting," but I just finished reading The Evolution of God by Robert Wright. I became interested in Robert Wright when I read that Bill Clinton called him a genius who managed to articulate some of his own deepest thoughts after reading his Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny.

You can read Clinton's thoughts on Wright here.

Just finished "The Affinity Bridge" by George Mann - touted on the Tor Steampunk month page - available as Kindle. OK read - bit of a "light" steampunk - but did have zombies and zeppelins!

Apparently part of a new series.

Just on the closing pages of George R Stewart's *Earth Abides* thanks to a chum here who sent me an ebook copy when I couldn't find one for sale anywhere. It was published in my year of birth (1949) and I must have read it a dozen times in my teens. Now -- after forty years away from the book -- I still find it absolutely thrilling, often quite profound and beautifully written. One of the first post-world's end novels with so many copy-cats of the cencept, there are still few to beat *Earth Abides*. Highly recommended.

Thumbs up

Just finished "Rowan of the Wood" - the first book I read on my new Kindle 2, and I LOVED IT! I couldn't stop reading it!

I had found the book because of a Kindle contest several months ago, but never got around to getting it. After I got my Kindle, I saw that the Kindle price was just 99 CENTS!

Can't go wrong!

Now I'm trying very hard to wait and get the sequel "Witch on the Water" until their promotional "send Witch to the top" day on Amazon, October 15th. These unknown authors deserve a boost.

If you like fantasy, give this one a shot. You won't be disappointed.

It's in the Top 20 (#15) of Kindle historical fantasy.
