heh. you hear that occasionally with french parents as well, among the high bourgeoisie or aristocratie. it *is* weird. but i would have a hard time not having the distinction. in many situations you automatically use the familiar form even with someone you just met (a party, for instance) but for example i have an annual contract working for 2 weeks once a year with the same people. i've been going back for 5 years, and officially we say "tu" to each other now. but i don't really know them very well, and i don't even work with them very often, so my reflex is to say "vous" and every year at least once i say "vous" to someone without thinking and they say "'vous' ?? but last year we said tu !" it seems unnatural to me to say "tu" in those situations.

I personally like the formal or polite way of addressing people that French and Spanish use. I'm a bit uncomfortable calling strangers, doctors, and older people by their first names. Mr. or Mrs. works well, and yes sir or yes ma'am also.

VISION UPDATE
I didn't get my eye fixed yesterday. It's too messed up for the laser. Next Tues, they will admit me for anesthesia and a victrectomy. On my good eye.

Meanwhile, I'm having the scarring complication AGAIN on the bad eye, which will need another victrectomy in a few months. Gonna live with the pain and blurriness as long as possible before letting them go back in and scrape loose the scar tissue from the original surgery.

Not only could I not see the big E on the eye chart projection, but I also couldn't see the projection at all with this eye.

gotta be windows/.net especially .net -- too many versions/releases/and divergent requirements requiring all versions to remain on the machines!

Actually, the versioning on .Net is pretty good, if not a bit confusing. .Net 1.0 and .Net 1.1 included new runtimes... Where .Net 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 all use the same 2.0 CLR/Runtime but each of 3.0 and 3.5 added new libraries, tools and compilers. So, yes if you want to install .Net 3.5 it has to include .Net 2.0/3.0.

Of course they are going to confuse it all with .Net 4.0 which is going to include a new CLR/Runtime again AFAIK.

Although, I don't see an issue with having several versions of .Net on a PC as a problem.

But, the myth that if a .Net app runs on one machine it will run on any one is certainly not true and really farking with me today.

May I remind the esteemed and steaming member for Tampa that computers don't suck.....that's gravity. If gravity didn't suck then his aviation experiences would be somewhat different.

I remain Sirs, yours etc etc....

PS May I refer the aformentioned member to my post about conversations with computer manual writers.

It's like the Good Old Days of Visual Basic runtimes. New versions were not supersets of older ones. You had to install the specific ones your applications wanted.

And I've seen a case where a mission critical app that wanted .NET 1.1 failed if .NET 2.0 was also installed in the machine, which made life interesting because another mission critical app required 2.0...

There are exceptions to any rule, and you get to deal with them. The Director of Developement at a former employer was eloquent about Java not necessarily being "write once, run anywhere", as he'd seen too much non-portable Java code...
