Not tempted to pre-order on US site as it comes with US power adapters etc.
I'll wait until amazon.co.uk start selling reader & titles. |

My guess is that it might be a language issue. They can't expect a significant market for english language books in non-english speaking countries. |

If you're buying the new international Kindle, the choice is between registering (i) to a US address, which will give you access to more titles and at a slightly lower price, or (ii) to a UK address, which will be less hassle, and allow you to purchase books directly from the Kindle. |

You could then have a: 1. US account with gift certificate attached - ok, so you'd have to pay $1.99 for downloads outside the US but would have a better book selection; and 2. a non-US account - limited book selection but no download fees. I understand from reading other posts that there's no problem having two accounts and that books aren't automatically deleted on deregistering the Kindle. Has anyone had experience of operating two accounts like this? Last edited by Grumpyreader; 10-08-2009 at 09:01 AM. Reason: Ineptitude |

As I have the US version of the Kindle, I'll probably continue to go the gift certificate route (assuming it lets me), given that I won't be able to download wirelessly in any case. But it's nice to know that I can register legitimately in the UK if the need arises. |

Cheers for your comments, interesting times ahead.
Nobody know if Sony books can be converted.? Im praying it has been all sorted out behind the scenes ready for roll out day. I'm a dream i know ha ha I hope they dont bugger it up like the Sony Reader and store. If all else fails, will sell it and buy the rumoured Apple Tablet, in the New Year. |

Hi guys !
It's been a while, but I have been using my K2 without any hitch with computer downloads when in Canada (which is most of the time...) and with whispernet when in the US. I would like to contribute to the discussion, but even though we are the closest neighbour of the US, we still are being told to wait before being able to use the wireless functionality...But we don't complain, we're Canadian... I am disappointed of course, but it is what it it ! I would not mind being forced to keep on using the GC as long as I can use the wireless. Am I to understand that this will be the case, but with a $1.99 additional charge for wireless downloads?? Can someone shed a little light on this. No hurry though... I'm not about to be able to use the wireless in Canada anyway....... Ciao ! |

I doubt it. I am definitely NOT an expert in this area, but my understanding is that no DRM'd books can be converted for the Kindle. Books without DRM should be OK if you run them through Calibre.
But if anyone tells you otherwise, chances are they're right and I'm not. |

The Sony DRM format ("LRX" files) has not been "cracked", and unfortunately the books can't be converted.

I wouldn't worry about that. I have contacted Sony support and they confirmed that any files can be redownloaded in Epub format once they have implemented the switch (I reported that in this forum about 2 months ago).

After several attempts Amazon service finally gave me some straight answers. You can only register the international Kindle 2 to a foreign account. The Iphone app, the US (CDMA) Kindle, and the DX all need to be registered to a US account. And for a US account you are supposed to be using a US credit card with a US billing address. You have to pay higher prices for international accounts even if you download from your computer.
So for those of you who got a Kindle of any kind in the past, nothing changes. Well, they won't get my business this way. Back to waiting to see what the DRG800 and Plastic Logic will actually deliver. |

So, it looks us I'll have to continue with the gift certificates after all. Never mind. At least, if I ever need to replace my Kindle, it'll be much easier next time round. |
