It looks like Amazon has made the geographical restrictions much more difficult to circumvent, because of the international introduction of the Kindle.
I still can purchase as usual, have done it 20 minutes ago.
UPDATE:I have to confirm, I can't purchase anymore...

I'm surprised Canada is not included yet. Kindle has some nice features, but even reaching here I'll stick with my Sony.

Out of curiosity, my Brazilian fellows can by it now, but it will cost them about US$600 in total, after adding all taxes!! In that case, I'd stay reading real books for a while

I was enthusiastic (and kind of disappointed, given my 2 Kindles with 4 and 3 months of age) too. Definitely genious from Amazon. Who would have expected? 100 countries! Wow!
BUT: It's a downsized Whispernet only. Just for downloading the books. No Wikipedia for example.
Downloading wirelessly would be convenient. But I can live with the USB mode, doing the same with Sony, CyBook, iRex...
But still: Respect, Amazon!
Have you asked them? because how can we be sure that the function "manage your kindle" will let us use these new kindles with our US accounts?

My frustration at the really poor customer service at Waterstones for the Sony reader convinced me to order one today. Hopefully happy days ahead.

Ok, so here is a question I haven't seen asked or answered.

If you ARE in the US and you buy the International version does it use AT&T now instead of Sprint? Or, does it use Sprint in the US and AT&T outside the US?

If it only uses AT&T even in the US this may change the whispernet coverage map and some people may get coverage now with AT&T where they couldn't get Spring coverage.

mgm (this, btw, is from now on your "kosename") : is this your answer to me as in "this is what you should do if" or is this what is now happening to you right now? I am asking, because I do not mind your short answers, but I am confused right now. And slightly drunk too, had a really bad day.

Edit: Okay, just read your update.

It uses AT&T in the US, see the Sprint and AT&T Kindle coverage maps. AT&T coverage seems to be better in the West. There also appears to be some coverage in Canada.

This made announcement is good news. Finally it looks like South Africa will also be getting in on the eReader map. I just don't like the idea of Amazon having the power to zap something already stored on the device out of existence, not to mention all the extra charges they add onto using the device.

Unless it's much cheaper than getting another eReader and they do something to boost their selection for us over here I'll give the Kindle a miss.

I can't help but speculate that if Canada is excluded, there must be a good reason that Amazon is not talking about. (they should have)

Some law or other has probably prevented it. Otherwise, they wouldn't have done it.

Golly, I can read Sony ebooks on my computer! If I download the clunky software! That's so much better than having the store tied to one ereader!
