Which, I feel, WT, is the ONLY way you can justify a store-dedicated device -- a bit like "here's a phone for a buck -- now pay the charges per call to our service."

Kudos to Amazon for lowering their price! Great news for everyone.
I now hope the other manufacturers are going to follow and do some price cut as well.

And while the International kindle would not be my first choice if I was to choose a reader, it's certainly now the easiest reader to order in countries where there isn't yet any readers officially released, like here in Mexico.

And one of the cheapest too, as they are quite reasonable on the shipping ($20).
As a comparaison, the corresponding shipping for a Sony reader on www.bhphotovideo.com is $34.

They may be waiting for Bell, see Bell HSPA to allow AT&T roaming, due in fall. This article says the only alternative is Rogers, who presumably don't want to play ball.

Looks like Japan is one of the three countries where the browser will work (and blog subscriptions work). The downside, then, is the higher prices of being a Japanese customer (at $2/book, but no download fees) vs. a US customer ($2/less a book, but no browser and $2+ downloads).

Someone else mentioned the much lower costs of data plans in some asian countries - I wish we could get a data only plan here (heck, I'd like it for home also, since we cannot get DSL for internet without also purchasing an analog line). Plans are coming down, here though - I only pay $12 a month for unlimited data on my line and our five cell lines run about $141/month with taxes (all have text, video msgs, only mine has data). Some unlimited everything plans are now down to $50/month/line.

Get on buses and travel from western Canada to southern FL for spring break. What with travel time and last minute stops in Montana (to buy beer/spend those last US dollars), that probably only leaves a week or two for doing laundry and packing for the next trip...

The Kindle isn't any more of a "store-dedicated device" than the Sony. Both devices are the only way to access the specific store content, but both will accept content from many other providers.

I wish you could read FB2 and Epub on Kindle, then it would be realy a nice reading device
