If I actually read that correctly are you saying that Amazon are charging people for the wireless? In actual fact they are only charging for the transfer of personal files over wireless ie: file conversion and sent via wireless to the kindle. Actual store purchase downloads and store browsing is still free.

Hya, Blue: Check your PMs. We (in the friendliest way) took over Jacobyte Books in Melbourne about five years ago and took on many Australian authors -- who have a pretty tough time back home. We produced paperback versions for the first time for these chaps and chappesses. Please do drop me a line. I'm keen to offer free ebooks in Oz to those who use ebook-dedicated readers, simply to promote the ebook-reading idea. One day, it might just pay off. Meantime -- what the heck; nobody loses a red cent. Hoots. Neil

Small publishers and authors have to get with the program, there is no fighting Amazon and there is tons of money to be made. For example, your ebooks are PDFs. If you don't have a MOBI version then all those Australian Kindles will pass on your ebooks. Also, you should seriously consider Amazon's DTP. The return is only 35% (of list price, so one strategy is to increase the list price modestly), but the market is so much larger than you would otherwise have. The default DTP contract is world-wide non-exclusive, but it can be limited geographically if you want. Calibre can probably produce a MOBI from your PDFs, perhaps with some tweaking. I have also heard good things about Book Designer for PDF conversion, however Calibre will add "waypoints" for the Kindle in its MOBIs. Also, if Calibre produces good MOBIs it will also produce good ePubs - for all the non-Kindle EInk readers. |

You're absolutely right, of course, Wallcraft. We put our digital stuff in place years ago when ebooks tended to be read on PC and laptop screens (PDFs are fine for that) and the general use of dedicated readers was just a sparkle in our eye.
That's no longer the case and we're currently converting to offer several other formats. Meantime -- because PDFs do sometimes lose a little format -- the odd paragraph break going amiss or an occasional line widow (though no loss or mangling of words), we offer them free or for a nominal cover price on our own website. Fair enough, eh? Right now, it's the e-reading thought that counts; though I do agree that the sooner that thought produces perfect presentation, the better it'll be. Hoots. Neil |

That book -- and the free offer of others -- should be with you now, Blue. Maybe my fault, but I seem to be losing some incoming PMs here at MobileRead and folks ain't always catching my own outgoing PMs. Email seems more reliable, My address is no secret if you want anything: ntmarrATbewrite.net (use the @ sign, of course). Hoots. N

You mentioned Dave Hutchinson, Blue -- yep, the same. I have a very neat SF collection from him called *As the Crow Flies*. I'll send you the ebook version in a minute. Think you'll like it. Also SF from multi-Hugo winners John Grant and David Langford. Just holler if you're interested. Cheers. Neil
PS: Sorry, folks, for the wee sidetrack. N Last edited by neilmarr; 10-08-2009 at 01:37 AM. |

On their way in five minutes, Blue. The Dave Langford piece is a spoof SF post-apocalptic piece called *Earthdoom* (the disaster novel to end all disaster novels -- and a real hoot). The other is *The Hundredfold Problem* from John Grant (who used to be our SF editor) and is a fun spin-off from his *Judge Dredd* books. By the way, Dave tells me that he has the second-biggest collection of Hugo Awards in the world (not sure who holds the first place -- must find out). John (Paul Barnett) meantime has only two; one each end of his matlepiece. Cheers for now. Neil
PS: Just sent you three ebooks, Blue. You should have *Earthdoom*, *The Hundredfold Problem* and *The End of Science Fiction*. N Last edited by neilmarr; 10-09-2009 at 04:38 AM. Reason: to add ps re sent ebooks |
