I tolerate nobody calling me by any of the standard expansions of my name. It's one syllable! embrace the efficiency!

And why is it so, Marcus?
You have a problem with elongation, Marco?
Shall I abstain to call you Marciano, from now on?

One advantage of having a name that is just impossible to contract!

No, like, seriously. Like, I like you, like, and so, like, I'll just press the button and, like, run away like, but, seriously, like...NO tolerance.

(This is an emoticon ---> to temper the serious )

[Adrian: Hmm, perhaps I shouldn't have played that card. I might be in a spot of bother if he finds out.]

Cheers (through gritted teeth),

I don't know what the logic is, other than I suppose it's to demonstrate friendliness. I was raised Southern. Southern manners are as you describe, you address people as Mr. or Mrs. But then the feminists came along and corrupted Mrs. to Ms. Then the younger people (30's and 40's) started being obsessed by youthfulness and felt that Mrs. and Mr. sounded "too old". I've been yelled at for everything EXCEPT calling someone by their first name. No matter how hard I try, I can't read minds, and I don't know how each individual customer prefers to be addressed. I don't usually have time to actually ask each customer, either, so I'm basically darned if I do, and darned if I don't!
Sorry, DG, I sympathize, I really do - but I don't know how to fix the problem from either end, unless everyone gets into the habit of announcing their personal preferences about how they want to be addressed as soon as they start patronizing a place of business. And even then, we see so many people in a day, I'd never remember how each person wanted to be addressed.

The problem doesn't lie with you, or the young man at the bank. Worked in retail long enough to realize you follow the program given. Regardless of what I said in an earlier post I would never dream of yelling at someone who stands behind the counter. OR slapping them. Honest.

But please, put me in a room with the bright bulb that thought this would foster "friendliness" or make me feel like "one of the family"

maybe because "monsieur" has only one form, whether you are married or not, young or old. however, it does tend to have a more "serious" or traditional connotation. so depending on the person it can feel very strange. once someone called my boyfriend "monsieur" et he twitched a bit. and the other day i was with a (deeply and authentically punkrock) friend and someone called him monsieur, and he twitched even more. in shops most people call me "mademoiselle" which i have no problem with. but from time to time there will be an 18 year-old at the counter who will call me "madame" and i admit i don't like that too much.

i'm lucky, my name doesn't seem to have any sort of contracted form.
