Our local Targets are sold out and the local Staples said they never got them in. No 505s to be found in our area. I went to Best Buy yesterday and they had a nice display with the 300 and 600 side by side where you can try them out. My wife and I have decided that if ours 505s break, she wants the 600 and I will end out with the 300 cause I prefer the contrast of the display on the 300 over the 600 but she likes the touch screen.

Those had to be just the cases or missing a two for $240. The economy isn't even that bad.

The 505 is a good unit and had a good run, instead of discontinued I like to think of it as retired

Just picked up a brand new Sony 505 from Target. $195.98.

Also got the lighted cover (the backlit one) for $45.48.

Love it.

I think whiteorca meant $40 bucks off.

Yeah, I got one too. Not the case. Seems a bit pricey. Maybe they'll be super cheap once there is no more PRS-505s to go with them.

PRS300 in US

Saw the PRS505 in a BestBuy In Manhattan last year, but wasn't convinced, even though the price was good compared to the UK.

Tried one in Waterstones in Kingston in May and fell in love - for some reason it seemed quicker than the one I tried in NY, and the display around it was much better lit (the shop display, not the reader). So I bought it (from Play.com, which has been cheaper for a while now). And I love it!

Tempted to buy a 300 when I finish my Harley trip in SFO next year (around April). Anyone know the best retail store in SFO (easy for a tourist to find)?

I guess the only difference is the warranty - but the savings are so tempting!

I've had my 505 for about 6 months and love it, my only complaint is the page#s on epub docs. Now that Sony's dropping lrf for epub, do you think there's any hope for one last firmware update to fix the page# issue?

What issue would that be?

Too bad. I really love my 505. Probably even more now that it's discontinued. It's a good idea to get one while you can. No reason to be sorry though, news like this means we are going to have new gadgets to play with.

Is saving $50 or whatever much is the difference worth spending half a year not using the device? And aren't you paying much more already for the tickets/hotel/etc?

That when you are reading an epub and change the size of the font the total number of page numbers doesn't increase or decrease like it does on lrfs.

Right now I get everything as epub and convert it to lrf to put on to read (I save the epub for archiving).

That is part of the ePub specification and isn't likely to change. (A book formatted with particular care could even match the page numbers to the paper version of the book.)

I still believe in a better method of displaying page numbers/progress, but I have given up trying to fight the manufacturers to make their products work better. Maybe Astak will release an open-source reader someday...
