i so agree about garbage bags !! i just can't bring myself to pay money for something whose only purpose is to be thrown away. it seems like i might as well cut out the middle step and throw my money in the bin directly ! instead from time to time i take plastic shopping bags rather than using my own cloth ones and use those. plus, the shopping bags are more and more made of biodegradeable stuff, and i don't think the garbage bags you can buy are (not sure though ; since i never buy them, i haven't checked).

I don't mind making clothes though - shopping for fabric is far more fun that clothes shopping (honestly, only dealing with spiders and dusting are less fun than clothes shopping), plus I get to play with making stuff and I end up with something in a fabric I like that actually fits me.

I did however buy 4 pairs of jeans the other day (I don't think I've ever had 4 pairs at the same time before) - they more-or-less fit properly (which sounds bad, but as my waist and hips are two different dress sizes is actually very good and rather surprising!), they're a decent colour and shape, the denim's not too thin and best thing is they were just over a fiver a pair.

Here you're not allowed to throw away small bags, it has to be the big green ones otherwise they just wont pick it up, and the apartment building doesn't have a common big bin, so I have to buy the big ones :grumble:

That's so true, and so much more fun! I know I can make clothes, but they all more or less look the same in the end, because I'm too scared of trying complicated patrons.

I'm going to assume it means really, really not costly, so: wow! I never found jeans I could wear under 25$!

There's been times I wish we had that rule. I have nothing against people using carrier bags for rubbish, but for ages the procession of next door neighbours would put their rubbish out in carrier bags, but not tie the top. Which meant that half their rubbish ended up on the street, in gardens and so on. The current chap does know how to tie a knot in bags, so the problem has dramatically decreased over the last few months.

The trick with complicated ones is to buy some very very cheap fabric and try it on that first. Or so I've been told...

They were about 10 CAD each. Normally I'd be looking at around 40+CAD (£25) a pair - hence never really having more than a pair at a time, and also wearing them until I really can't mend them any more!

i like to make my own clothes too, that way i'm not wearing the same dress as every other girl in the city ! i like to be unique. but i only do it when i'm in the mood, and although i've made complicated things in the past, now i'm better off making something i can finish in the day, otherwise i get distracted or don't have time to go back to it (or i'm not in the mood any longer...) and i never finish it. also i only make something for the current season ; if i can't wear it the second i finish it, i'm not interested.

i don't like wearing jeans much so for a long time i had none at all, then i had one pair that a friend gave me (and they were from the gap, so i later discovered *very* expensive ; it's a bit shocking how much they sell those things for !). it turns out cat hair doesn't stick to jeans, so i started to wear them quite often at home, until i wore them out completely. then i bought some more but i refuse to pay very much for them so i got the ones which were on sale. still, i think they were more than 5£ !!! that's only about 5€ !!! unbelievably cheap. the ones i got were around 15€, and that is a good price for them, apparently. there's no way i'm going to spend 60€ (or more !) on jeans, as far as i'm concerned they're not even "real" trousers !

ha, here there's always a common bin for the buildings, and you have to put everything in there, but apart from sorting for recycling i don't think it matters what bag you use, practically everybody i know uses shopping bags.

i am seriously wondering if one of my neighbors doesn't just toss their garbage into the courtyard from their windows, since frequently there are papers and bits of packaging strewn around there. bunch of savages.

i would never have the patience for that ! but what i like about sewing is that you can make something which *looks* complicated (or at least, it looks very original) but really it's very simple. and depending on the fabric you use it can be a completely different style based on the same pattern. i had a dress pattern when i was in school which i made 3 different times in different fabrics, i just changed the length of the skirt (short or long) and the height of the waist, and it was a whole wardrobe. and it was such an easy pattern i could make it in a few hours.

Cat, I'm so glad you have such a generous neighbor! I wish I could give her Karma!!

When we put closet organizers in the our walk-in closet, I finally went though my clothes and got rid of a lot of clothes and shoes that I never wear anymore. I filled 4 large black trash bags. I would like to say that all of it was current, but some of the more dressy stuff had to have been from before Ryleigh was born. I then went through Ryleigh's closet and filled two more large trash bags with all the clothes she's outgrown in the last year or so. When I took it to the Goodwill store and told the worker it was all clothes, he gave me the strangest look. He must have thought I went around the neighborhood collecting old clothes. I just figured it was silly to hold on to stuff when I pretty much just wear jeans and sweaters now that I'm not working.

I used to love making clothes for Shannon when she was little but have only been sewing for the house in the past few years with the exception of a Halloween costume here and there. I've made Ryleigh a Monarch Butterfly costume where I quilted the wings and a bat costume which also had quilted wings. This year she asked if I could make her a cow costume. When I suggested a fairy or pincess, she told me those were to "girly". I think she's been hanging out with too many boys.

Aye, I've shirts like that. I've one that technically isn't a shirt any more unless you're a very proud emperor. I just tell people that this bit of cotton, here, right here, stuck on my elbow, yeah, right there...if you squint your eyes a bit and use your imagination to extrapolate from that, you'll see that I'm wearing a really, really nice t-shirt, that is so, so, SO comfortable.

Nice, hey? What? Oh, them...no, they're my underpants. A man's got to keep the sun off his head, you know.

'S true, though admittedly for some of us it's less "party trick" then it is "just how I roll, baby".

I found a picture of Ryleigh in her Bat costume (I'm still looking for the butterfly pic) and thought you all might like to see it.
