No it is not possible for short stories to see how long they are. But I was also referring to other functionality like being able to read 50 pages or getting a sense of progress when reading for example 20 pages.

Yes, it is now impossible to switch fast between two books if they happen to be a long way from each other in the library view.

Yes, it is now impossible to switch fast between two books if they happen to be a long way from each other in the library view.

....but probably quicker than running downstairs to the bookshelf to get ones next book ....

If you read two or three books in parallel then you always have them near you so the switching is nearly instantaneous.

Finding the next book on the Cybook either means loading it from a computer or trying to find it among hundreds of books in the library view and that is not so easy if you do not remember exactly how the title is sorted. So in booth cases it is probably faster jag fetching a paper book in a bookshelf.

I understand that the Jinke devices have a "books I've most recently opened" pseudo-folder in their library view. That sounds like an extremely useful feature that I wish other manufacturers would adopt. It would be easy enough, one would have thought, for Bookeen to add a "sort by most recently opened" view to the library.

It is (and has always been) possible to look how many pages a book has - very similar to what you have to do with a pbook (!) - with the "Go to page..." functionality... It tells you how many pages the book has.

BTW: OK, you do it, but i doubt very much readers are going for that "I'll read 20 pages now" approach...

As I have said a lot of time this measurement is not accurate at all for short stories that you download as html pages. That is because the html contains a lot of metadata and other stuff that are not shown as text and that is included in the total page count.

That was not what I wrote. I talked about a sense of progress when you have read 20 pages. Or read 10 pages. Or whatever.

Do you still not get it that it is two arguments? One was to be able to read a specific number of pages. The other was that when you have read e.g. for 10 minutes or so you should have some way to get some feedback that will give you a sense of progress in the book or a sense of that you have done something.

I'm going to say it again on the off chance someone who complains about lots of books in the library will suddenly grasp this concept-

If you don't put hundreds of books on your Cybook, you won't have that problem. Seriously. You can easily put just a couple of pages of books and have more books than you could possibly want to open in a week (20-40). Your Cybook will load faster when you turn it on, and you won't have 50 pages to wade through in the library. You have 50 pages to wade through in the library because you are putting 50 pages of books on the reader. Stop it and the problem magically disappears.

Do you really think that people wanting more book are not clever enough to have considered that alternative?

It is a question about having enough books on the reader to be able to choose the next book to read without accessing your computer. For me that is a lot of books since I am rereading some authors and choose the book from them I fell for at the moment.

It is also a question about minimizing the administrative work for being able to read books. Doing unnecessary work always feels wrong.

Oh, I completely understood what you've been saying - no need to get angry with me.

And I can perfectly remember, that is hasn't been the first time you've been requesting it. But you should try to realize, that you're not with the majority on this. Most people seem to be OK with the progress bar and there are even ones that don't like the page numbers in ePubs...

BTW: I'm perfectly happy with the progress bar and the information it provides. When I've read for half an hour, I'm nearer to the end - this is my progress... I tend to see a book more like a journey.

Of course people will have varied opinions about this. I have seen other people at MR and in other places having the same feelings I have. And I was very surprised when I noticed that I cared about it.

Another thing I have noticed now when reading paper books is that I look at the cover each time I start reading. It would be very nice if when reading a book and not changing page in a long time the the cover would be shown. When you pick up the reader you will see the cover and pressing a button will take you to the correct position.

I have an example for a situation: When I start reading a new book I check to see how many pages I read from home to work so I would get a feeling how many workdays it would take me to finish the book. And after that I would normally always look at the page number when closing the book. Primarily because I had to do it with paper books so I would know where to continue reading next time. But also a little to check my progress, sometimes I find parts hard or boring to read and I am surprised that I still managed to read more pages than average although it felt like a lot less. Sometimes I read parts where I think about something mentioned there and my thoughts start to wander and when arrive I notice that I have read only a couple of pages (the "daydreaming" was obviously longer than I thought).

Of course it's only some weird personal habit and by no means "necessary" for me to read books. But it was something I liked about paper books and which I - maybe a bit irrationally - miss...

Oh well, as Fleetwood Mac said, there will be another Monday, next week.
