Why in the world is there so much krap before the story starts! Jeeze!
I downloaded (free) the B&N version of Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austin as it is one of the "classics" on my to be read list and of 997 total pages - mobi format - there are over 60 pages of krap before the first word of the novel starts!

I just wanna read the book! I don't want an analysis or history of the author or the work or !!!! JEEZE!!!

Whew! I feel better now...

Hehe... try an Audiobook dude... I recently started to listen to Stephen Kings "The Dark Tower" on my way to and from work (which is an hour by car each way) and boy did I get annoyed before the book actually started, I think the whole ride to work was taken up by the "foreword".

You might try the version in the MR upload section instead. I believe that HarryT has done a proofed edition.

Not properly proofed yet. On my list to do. I've done a proper proofing of "Pride and Prejudice", though. The version of S&S that's here, though, is in reasonable shape.

Zelda recently complained about a large spider in her apartment.

A friend has just pointed out this article, in which scientists propose to test the claim that spiders hate horse-chestnuts (aka conkers), so putting a few horse-chestnuts on window-sills and in corners may help to deter the critters:

Incidentally, the horse-chestnut tree [Aesculus hippocastanumis] called Marronnier d'Inde in French, and there are a lot of them growing on the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin, and they should be producing nuts now.

excellent news patricia !! thank you ! i will have to go foraging for chestnuts tomorrow. we've got plenty of them in the neighborhood (on quite a few streets in addition to along the canal). i'll just take your word for it, and skip the article with the picture of the spider.

so, how many is a few ? do you think a salad bowl of them by each window would be enough ? there are quite a lot of corners in this place but i'm willing to sprinkle chestnuts liberally through the house to avoid spiders. the cats are probably going to have a field day with this.

I would imagine that a salad-bowlful would be enough and should also keep your cats amused for some time!

i suspect the cats will be a great assistance in making sure the chestnuts get dispersed in *every* corner.

All our spiders are coming out to play at the moment. I nearly walked through a largish Garden Spider' and her web just yesterday in the garden. I had to drag Maggie away from sniffing at a palm-sized wolf spider on the front stairs last night. Good thing is, as they've come out, the few flies and mossies we were getting have suddenly dropped drastically in number, no doubt helped by the reemergence of the chirping geckos starting to run 'round the walls in and out. All we need now is the warm rain and it will be summer proper. Already starting to spend a couple of hours each week mulching palm leaves and watching the ants and spiders jumping to safety as I pick up the leaves.
