Wifi is a good fallback if the wireless carrier decides to cancel the contract or if they go out of business. Or more practically, if you are in an area with no coverage such as a foreign country, cruise ship, air plane, etc.
I wonder if the device has a sim slot for GSM networks, or does the GOBI chipset not need a sim? Checking out the GOBI chipset, I see it comes on a PCI Express Mini Card form factor. I wonder if it's the same on the irex device... which means you can potentially swap in a WIFI PCI Express Mini Card, hack in some drivers... Last edited by badbob001; 10-01-2009 at 02:00 PM. |

It would make sense for them to include a sim slot since it would add little to the cost and save them from having to make two versions of the same device for such a small change.
