I was going to ask our German speaking members to help me in crafting a typical very long German composite word for "That electronic interactive device (female gramatical gender please) for reading books in electronic format", but the above 電子書籍 is much, much better

But how do you discuss a device without 'imposing' your preferred term for it?

And what harm does it do to have a different term to your preferred one used in your presence?

I think we should accept there is no universal name as yet, and have a list of synonyms in the Wiki that are all regarded as equally acceptable.

I'm happy for you to use 電子書籍, if that's the term you prefer. Once I've encountered the word and seen it's usage or definition (as most responsible posters would provide in their original post, although, I'm perfectly capable of Googling it) I'm intelligent enough to remember it's meaning. I don't even really care what the literal translation would be because I trust that you won't present a foreign word that could be insulting or rude. If it means balderdash and you want to call electronic reading devices, balderdash, that's okay by me. Maybe I'm a little too trusting, but I think there are enough close-minded and cynical people in the world without adding myself to their ranks.

Lemurion.

Z, I was simply responding to the question with an example. Certainly the reactions of some here are in the same vein and as I said in an earlier post there appears to be a lot more going on with this than just the word as there is with the N-word.

regardless of your motivation for the analogy, it is invalid. there is no possible way to conflate the use of a perfectly legitimate, non-derogatory, inoffensive word (liseuse) with a racial slur. there does seem to be a lot more to the reactions to liseuse than just a preference for a different word however and frankly i really have to wonder about a few people.

However, it has been decided that the official word for eBook reader is not that silly word.

No. It is not invalid. It is perfectly valid in the context. That is the way people are reacting to it. You're blowing this comment way out of proportion just as you are with the original issue itself in defending it.

Again let me state my position. I have no problem with the word being used in the French speaking forums but object to it in the English-speaking forums and particularly in the Reviews and News sections. There are perfectly good English terms in use historically as well as by the device manufacturers. We do not need a made-up word (like Kindle for example).

If people insist on using it in the English forums, I can't change that, but I certainly can express my objection or reaction to them using the term. It will eventually work itself out.

In English I call it "ebook reader".
In Chinese I call it "電子書" or "電子書閱讀器" (dianzi shu or dianzi shu yuedu qi)
In French I call it "je ne parle pas français" or "ebook reader".
