Uh, the DR1000 doesn't exist. The only model you can get is the DR1000S, probably because the UI is primarily intended for use with the stylus.

Yes, you can use it without one, but it's not very efficient that way.

Oops. That's pretty funny. They certainly have announced many products that are never released. Perhaps they exist in some form in specialized markets, like what they did with the iliad for pilots. I wonder how that is doing. Perhaps not so well if the last iliad update is from 2007.

The less I have to stab at a glass screen and risk a scratch, the better. It probably won't last a minute if I gave it to my 3 year old to trace her ABCs, unless there is a way to increase the sensitivity so it can sense the pen through my glass-top coffee table.

I am sure when iRex says "DR1000" they are referring to the full product line, not a specific model.

Before the DR was released they did advertise both a "DR1000" and "DR1000S" model (as well as a DR1000SW). However, the DR1000 (no stylus) was never sold. It got removed from their site before the official launch. There might have been pre-orders at some point, but that was it. The only model that was ever made available was the DR1000S.

I don't know for sure, but I suspect that during the final development/testing leading up to the official launch they realized that the UI is designed for use with the stylus and that trying to use the DR without one is fairly cumbersome. It's possible do to so if you have to, but would not work out well as the ONLY input method.

Would you really want to give a several hundred dollar electronic device to a 3 year old?

Does "Capacitive buttons with optical feedback" mean a blinking light?

Yes. What else would "optical feedback" mean?

Ugh, could they make it any less convenient?

And why the heck are they using MicroSD on a device this large?

In Irex's blog, they say it's SD:

the memory is a removable 2GB SD card which is located behind the battery and can be replaced by bigger SD cards.

This brings up a question I'm curious about. How many of you that own iLiads and/or DRs regularly swap out memory cards? Personally, I've got one that basically stays in the reader all the time, so putting it behind that battery access wouldn't be a big deal.

Are there many people that swap cards regularly?

Well, I take it out whenever I want to change the contents on my CF card (due to the corruption issues along with the sluggishness of the iLiad as a storage device via USB)

Assuming that was solved in a new device though, do you think you'd pretty much leave the same card in it all the time?

With my iLiad the only time the card came out was to add content, but that was partly due to the hassle of connecting the iLiad to the computer through the port. Having a standard usb connection that also charges makes it easier to just plug the device into the computer and transfer content. I don't think I would remove the card that often if at all.
