Also, thank you for the photos. To me, the interpretation of .Lit files looks fine. I can live (for now) without the use of Chapter links, if that's one of the shortcomings, one that will be hopefully addressed in firmware updates.

However, I don't think I can live with every two paragaphs (for example) having split sentences and split words.

I read almost exclusively fiction, so any problems would appear to be minimized, at least in the examples you've provided.

Again, thank you for these photos.

I may just go ahead and order the white unit - before the end of the month, if I want to take advantage of the savings. (I wonder how long it would take to arrive in Peru?)

I think you misunderstood. The Table of Contents worked just fine, so the chapters can be reachd through the "catalog" table of contents. The Bookmarks, where you mark the file as you read, worked fine. What I did not check out was the imbedded Hyperlinks that the author puts in. I didn't see any, but I'll look again. [Just looked for hyerlinks, didn't see any in this book]

I not sure what you meant by splilt paragraphs, the only "splits" were ligitimate paragraph breaks. However, the hypenation does split words in strange places. My personal preference is no hypenation, but each to their own. I'm looking at a page on my PP and it has the word closer hypenated "clo-" next line: "ser", and "eli-" "xir". These two were on the basic page, which also had four paragraphs.

I do love my PP so I reluctantly tell you this. I have had many hangups in the lit file. Tying to go to the zoom just froze it and I had to reset. Entering the book is much slower than the other formats, and there was a problem with the pagination. Obviously the page length of the file was one or two lines longer than the page on PP, so the last line or so was off the bottom, turn the page and they are at the top, all alone. Next page, and they appear at the top with the next page. I feel that these are issues than can be addressed with Astak etal. Whether they will or not, I don't know. But I didn't see any split lines, as you indicated. Just new paragaphs.

Nick = short for "nickname" or, in this case, your screen name of AJ Starr

Ace Attorney = I'm assuming this refers to the "Ace Attorney" series of videogames on the Nintendo DS. I believe there was a character in one of them whose name was Angel Starr.
No, I am not using a nickname from a video game.

I chose Alyson Starr as my pen name for if and when I get my novel finished. Alyson from my mother's maiden name and Starr from my father's mother's maiden name. The Starr IS from the famous Starr family in Oklahoma. My great great grandfather was Tom Starr, Sr. If you don't know who he is you probably wouldn't be interested in the history. J is for Jo, my sortof name.

Mr JWolf, I'm not sure what you meant by a real file. I downloaded this Lit file from Baen. I did not send it through any conversions. I don't have the software to read lit files on my system. Only Calibre, and I didn't send it though it. Could you be more specific in what you would like.

New photos

Alright....playing with it again.

There is apparently 3 zoom levels, the basic, one larger vertical and then one horizontal. I must have just missed the change last time.
[editing: looking closer, the zooms did not change the word wrap, i.e., reflow. The basic level has a margin, the 1st zoom eliminated the margin with the same words on the line, but slightly larger. The 2nd zoom, horizontal, same words on the line, but the width of the device makes them larger. From this I assume that .Lit files are not reflowing, at least on the PEZ. end edit]
Choosing from the TOC does take a long time, as does changing zoom. There again, a fixable software, if they get to it.

Three pictures, each of the different zooms. I started taking this because of the strange left margin on the screen. Not sure what is causing this other than the ebook file itself, i.e. spaces at the end of lines, etc. Again, I've never dealt with lit. files so I don't know.

It looks like there perhaps (?) might be an issue with kerning using whatever font is being used. (This might possibly be solved with hyphenation off, or using only left justification if that choice is available, or even using a different font.)

What I meant by split paragraphs should have worded like this: Sometimes, I've noticed in .lit conversion packages that a line of text [on the screen] might be broken or split, and the remaining line will appear on the next line on the screen.

Anyway, I'm almost certain I can live with this. I realize that the Astak people might not even address this issue, one wherein .lit files are noticeably lower in priority compared to any other issues the Reader might have.

Thanks for those photos. The one on the extreme left was really good in allowing me to see what specific issues the Reader may have in displaying .lit files.

I'm still thinking I want to purchase this, and I appreciate the time you put in on your comments and in supplying some photos.

If yew can read with this, yew are a better man than I. I have found .MOBI and .FB2 to be the easiest formats to read. I really hate the way the letters are not spaced correctly on .LIT and I do think this will be fixed eventually. At least I hope so?

I know this is dumb question, but why not either extract the HTML from the lit or convert to mobi using Calibre?

The spacing looks to be because the file was saved with the Center attribute on instead of Justify or Left-Alignment.

ALL lit files look that way. Every last one of them. So far I have tried to convert using Calibre. I have tried many different formats but I can't seem to get a clean conversion. Those that do well don't keep the formatting. Bold, italic, etc. The ones that keep the formatting don't convert so well.

Maybe it wasn't such "excellent advice" after all.

From my perusal through some of the pages, not all of them were like that. That page caught my attention because of the spacing. However, that chapter might have had a centering code put at the beginning of it. The original text file would be the only way to tell.

However taking another look, now that you mention that, what it looks like is that the software for LIT files does not strip the space off the end of the line when a SoftReturn or Linebreak is encountered. The space between words is sometimes at the end of the line and sometimes at the beginning of the line. This is a coding problem with .LIT software.

I added a comment about the zoom on the pictures above.

Thanks for the pics, AJ (sounds nothing like 'angel'). I can't wait for my v5 to arrive - my sister bought me one when she was in China on business. I should be arriving this week!
