I just noticed a legitimate thread wherein the person asks, "Can the Sony reader read to you." The only reply was a VERY rude DUPLICATE THREAD and the the thread had been closed.

Did you guys ever stop to think that people don't have time to read through every darn thread on this site? Did it ever occur to you that merely saying DUPLICATE THREAD and not giving a link to the other thread(s) is incredibly RUDE. The person who responds in this manner certainly will never make a good teacher or even a good parent. The motto should be to help, not to react to duplicate threads like they are taboo. And before any one pulls that "use the search feature" garbage, let me clearly state that I have NEVER seen a forum search feature that worked worth a darn. A three year old could code better search features than those used with forums. |

Couldn't it be that the poster of that thread posted his/her question in several different forums and that's what the mod meant with duplicate thread? I saw the thread in question and I did find the reply a bit short and it could have been posted a bit more friendly, especially since it was in all caps which is considered shouting on the internet.

jswinden - I have experienced exactly the same.

Please see this post for an example. Basically I have been instructed by a moderator not to start a duplicate thread but said moderator has ignored multiple requests for where that duplicate thread actually is! At best it's bad manners, at worst, it's incompetency! |

Best they can do is if they think you made a duplicate thread, to give you the link to said duplicate thread so you can see for yourself.

You would hope so, wouldn't you. Unfortunately, at least one to my knowledge appears to believe himself to be above such common courtesies.

I did see on the posters profile that he did make two topics for the same question, one here and one on the 500/505 board. But of course being this short of answer isn't exactly encouraging a new poster. It would maybe be nicer to just explain to said new poster why duplicate posts are not appreciated.

The thread to which you refer was closed because it was in violation of item 3 of the "Posting Guidelines" which you have all (hopefully) read:

jswinden, it is true that we try to avoid having too many threads on the same topic to avoid fragmenting the discussion. however you are right that it is more helpful to mention that a thread is a duplicate of another and provide a link to the original thread, particularly for someone who might not have much experience with forums in general. i will certainly make sure i do this whenever i close a duplicate thread. i thank you for bringing up the issue.

One thing I do feel is that if a thread is to be closed for being a duplicate, any message in the closed thread that are relevant to the original thread be combined into the original thread. And the last message in the duplicate thread have a link posted to the original thread. That way, everyone can find where the active thread is with all the relevant message being there.

Also this thread should have been moved to the Feedback forum with a 3 day expiring trackback on it. |
