Thats because the others are Walmart type off-brands. If this market takes off it will be because one of the above three brands lit the fire.

That's just reality.

To be honest, I see B&N being a big player once they start selling the iRex and Plastic-Logic as long as they both have ePub via ADE on board.

To really go mainstream, Sears needs to come out with a Kenmore for ebooks.

I think more plug-in apps for existing devices would do.

Very nice, Steve... Hummm... I knew him when he......

http://www.teleread.org/2009/09/23/t...ebook-formats/

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/te...sics.html?_r=1

The article, IMO as a little consumer, presented you as an important player as you were quoted along with: Neelan Choksi (one of the founders of Lexcycle), Andrew Herdener (a spokesman for Amazon), and Allen Lau (a co-founder of Wattpad). ***remember: viewpoint of little consumer, doesn't know names of the players, but does recognize names of companies..)***

Plus the comment in the article..."Writing the book itself is just the beginning. Nick Cave, a rock musician and sometime author, used an iPhone to write one chapter of his second novel, “The Death of Bunny Munro.” He and his longtime musical collaborator, Warren Ellis, then developed an original score for the book." ****IMO the cover is better looking for the UK versions***

I especially liked that your website was mentioned in the NYT for the curious to check out....“I’m already selling six different formats on my Web site,” Mr. Jordan said. “If they have a particular format they prefer, they can usually get it from me.”

I hope this sets a record for hits and sales on your site!

If only they'd included the web address in the print version... alas, all those paper-readers will now have to go Googling for me.

But I agree: The company they put me in has left me pretty buoyant for most of the day. Everyone's walking around saying, "Who's that guy floating over our heads with the s**t-eating grin and bamboo-rayon socks?"

Say, did anyone notice that at the bottom of the NYT article page, there's a link back to this thread, and the TeleRead article as well? Bump-back to MR!

Just wanted to say that I've thoroughly enjoyed reading Steve's books; I think there are only one or two that I haven't purchased and read yet.

Yay, Steve! I've bought and enjoyed many of your books* and all the others are high up in my TBR list. I've also downloaded, read, enjoyed (and learned from) all your blog posts.

I've referred several people to "What you want to get used to", as it's so relevant for booksellers and readers.

http://www.stevejordanbooks.com/essays/jtheorem.htm

I just realised that "reader" is no longer specific to a person who reads books. Hmm.

* Edit: I mean I bought many and enjoyed all of them that I've read so far**
** Edit2: and I expect to enjoy all the ones I haven't read, too!

That's a good one to reference, because so many people have trouble coming to that basic understanding about something new in their world.

It also helps explain how so many people can enjoy reading on smaller devices, like cellphones and PDAs, that other people can't imagine using (I, a PDA reader, am still that way when I see someone reading on a Blackberry... ). I'd hoped a bit more of that had made it into the article, but something tells me the article was sent to press earlier than intended, and a lot of its original focus might have been left out (this is not confirmed with the author, just my suspicion. I'm checking.)

x'actly...I can read on whatever device I have. I have a Kindle but I do not like reading on it, still if it is handy I can use it for a while. Like Steve I was weened as a PDA reader and I really prefer the way my Clie works for reading. My N800 Nokia is a really nice device once you get used to the feel, it also helps to have a flexible hand, which I dunna...still I make it work because I not only have them but, I already own them. Why pay for a new device that is either an incremental modification of a design I am not partial to or that does not offer me more than I already have. Cripes I paid $17 for my Clie and it has done me well foe a number of years now. I can read on it for hours no problem and I'm near 50 now...

I think the idea of "you have to have this or that type of reading device or you are fill-in-the-blank" is wrong approach from a consumer perspective.

Right! The proper approach should be to sell 'em on e-books, on what-the-heck-ever they want to read 'em on! Of course, if you can get most every device to read one format, like OEB (ePub), the job is that much easier.

Once you sell them on e-books, then you worry about putting out a dedicated device with such a compelling combination of features to entice them to buy. Trying to sell the device before they're hooked on e-books is putting the cart before the horse.
