The usage that more and more people seem to be objecting to (judging by the votes anyway) is the ongoing attempt by a small number of people to push its use as an english term as well despite the fact that it needlessly confuses matters just as terms like ebook, ereader etc are finally starting to gain a bit of mainstream recognition. |

If what you are suggesting is the case, we would have to very carefully go through the English language and remove all of those words that we use on a daily basis (particulary while posting here) that have an origin other than Old English. The glory of the English language is the way that it incorporates words from many different origins, much to me, like the great melting pot that is the United States of America. Why would it be such a stretch to include the word "liseuse" into the English language as we have done other words, such as, resume, rendezvous, etc. By choosing to make such a big deal out of the use of a word, a word that is not offensive in any way, shape or form, we are being exclusionary. Although this forum is an "English" language forum; it is essentially an International forum and has for the most part seemed to embrace all nationalities and cultures. That tradition should continue. If you don't like the word, don't use it; but don't object or cry fowl if someone else chooses to use it.

The reason why I object to it, is merely because if you attempt to use the word, most people you talk to will not understand what you mean, including french speakers. If others don't understand you, then what is the point in trying to communicate?

To be honest, I wouldn't use liseuse in a conversation about my Sony here in Northern Virginia, either. But, in the Lounge forum where the word usage predominantly originated, it is absolutely appropriate. However, that doesn't mean you can't use it in other forums, just be aware that if you do, someone might not know the meaning. If you want perfect clarity and minimal confusion, don't use it. Having said that, though, there are colloquialisms and acronyms that have been used by posters from other countries that I routinely have to Google. I have yet to complain about it and actually like to do it. I look at it as a learning experience and a chance to expand my knowledge of other cultures.

As I see it, a vocal minority of regular Lounge posters decided it would be funny to get this word adopted and got carried away. I wouldn't mind if it was restricted to the silly threads and not being imposed on everyone else. |

It was pushing to get it into Wikipedia, not pushing you to use it. There are lots of terms in Wikipedia that I would not use and would prefer weren't even in use. But that's just my opinion. Besides all that, I personally have never accepted Wikipedia as the final authority on anything. There are too many chances for error or opinion.

Of course you should not accept Wikipedia as the final authority on anything, and it does not even pretend to be the final authority. Any respectable article on Wikipedia will have a section at the end where references to support the article are cited, and you can follow those to find supporting information. That was the test that the word in question here failed, because the only available references apparently only pointed back to here. The technical and professional electronics magazines and web sites in the English language already have pretty much settled on their word of choice anyway.

Oddly enough, my real trigger for the poll was because I didn't like it when another thread was derailed into a discussion of the word liseuse just because it was in the thread title, so I figured we could talk about it here and leave other threads to their actual topics.
While I personally don't care for the word, I wasn't worrying too much about it until I saw the thread degeneration. I never thought it was likely to become the mainstream English word (and don't care which words are used in other languages) because it appears too obviously coined and many people dislike it. I just don't make the connection between the word and the device so it doesn't work for me. I have no problems with the idea of using a foreign word for my device, but I won't use it unless the word works for me, and this one doesn't. |
